Ballad Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Ballad Ventures is the corporate venture arm of Ballad Health, the integrated health system serving 29 counties across Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Northwest North Carolina and Southeast Kentucky (about 21 to 22 hospitals, mostly rural). The fund backs healthcare technology that improves patient outcomes and operational efficiency, and it pairs capital with a live health system where founders can validate their product. Its stated areas are digital health, medtech, tech-enabled services, consumer health and wellness, and health care operational infrastructure.
In September 2026 Managing Director Mike Anderes published four focus areas, drawn from an inventory of more than 400 operator problems collected from Ballad service-line leaders, pharmacists, clinicians, IT, finance and supply chain. Each problem was run through three filters: is it defensible, does Ballad's strategic plan speak to it, and will Epic ship it. The four areas are regulatory and compliance (the labor of proving compliance, audit automation, AI governance), med-tech for core service lines and rural care (cardiovascular, cancer, neuroscience, urology, orthopedics, general surgery), pharmacy, and the entry point to cancer care (screening, referral, intake and navigation).
Moat Test
Pure-software companies must show two of four moats: proprietary data, product insight, distribution or network effects, or a regulatory barrier. Founders are asked to bring the operator problem in an operator's words, which two moats they hold, and why the product sits outside what Epic will ship. The fund explicitly avoids areas where Epic is a free incumbent, such as clinical care and quality, revenue cycle and patient growth.
Stage Focus
Initial investments from Pre-Seed through Series B. Anderes writes that the lane is the early-stage gap left by mega-deal concentration in 2026 digital health funding.
Check Size
The homepage says up to $1.5M initial investment depending on stage. Anderes's September 2026 post says $250K to $2M. Both are recorded; the range used is $250K to $2M.
Lead Tendency
Not stated. The November 2026 med-tech post says Ballad prefers other health systems on the cap table, which suggests it often co-invests in syndicates. Lead tendency is left unknown.
Med-Tech Criteria
Six tests from the November 3, 2026 post: a patient touched in the Ballad footprint within 24 months (510(k) fits, De Novo sometimes, PMA rarely); reaches people where there is no specialist; dramatically lowers cost or lifts outcomes at the same cost; users would miss it; a second moat beyond clearance (data, distribution, hardware plus software, reimbursement); and other health systems at the table.
Recent Activity
Fund II was planned for launch in 2026 per a September 2025 search post by Bo Wilkes; size is not disclosed in anything found. Mike Anderes joined as Managing Director in February 2026 (previously led a $50M corporate venture fund). Portfolio news on the site includes Bioliberty's Series A extension, 410 Medical's $12M growth financing (July 2026), Homecare Hub's $2.5M seed and Winter Innovations' FDA 510(k) clearance for the EasyWhip family (July 2026).
Portfolio Highlights
The site lists eight companies:
- Bioliberty: soft robotics and AI for neurorehabilitation
- Tessellate: physician-first career matching
- 410 Medical: LifeFlow rapid fluid resuscitation
- EvidenceCare: EHR-integrated clinical decision support
- Homecare Hub: small shared care homes for seniors
- Censinet: healthcare cybersecurity and third-party risk

The site gives no investment stage or date for any of them.
Team
- Mike Anderes, FACHE, Managing Director: clinician and health-system leader, digital transformation strategist at an academic medical center, led a corporate venture portfolio of 15+ healthcare startups.
- Bo Wilkes, President: about 15 years in health system strategy and governance, leads the Ballad Health Innovation Center.
Decision Process
Not published. Ballad Ventures is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ballad Health, and the Innovation Center and operators take part in validation. Treated as a partnership process.
Founder Preferences
Founders who can name an operator-validated problem, hold two moats, and show why Epic will not ship the product. Rural and community health deployment is a plus.
Geographic Focus
Based in Johnson City, Tennessee. Deployment focus is the Appalachian Highlands footprint, but initial investments are not described as limited to the region.
