Booz Allen Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Booz Allen Ventures is the corporate venture arm of Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH), launched in 2022. It backs early-stage startups building advanced technology that can be brought to U.S. government missions at speed and scale. Its stated tagline is "Funding breakthrough tech to secure our nation's future." Focus areas are AI, cybersecurity, defense tech, deep tech (including quantum and space), and, since July 2025, American reindustrialization. The firm says it invests with both financial returns and strategic alignment in mind, and it pairs capital with Booz Allen's engineering base: about 20,000 technologists and 180,000 square feet of manufacturing capability.
Fund Size and Status
The unit started with a $100M commitment. On July 21, 2025 Booz Allen tripled it to $300M and said it expects 20 to 25 new investments over five years. The site also cites $400M invested into an a16z Growth Fund, 24 investments made, 4,000+ companies sourced, 1,000+ companies met, and 40+ teaming agreements signed. Recent announced deals (April 2026: Scout AI, Ulysses, Portal Space Systems; ODC in March 2026) show it is actively deploying.
Stage Focus
Primarily early stage. The FAQ says it invests mainly in early-stage, U.S.-based startups. The portfolio page lists round milestones for each company, from a $15M seed (Scout AI) up to later rounds (Shield AI Series F, Hidden Level Series C). Those figures are the companies' rounds, not necessarily Booz Allen's entry stage, so no per-company entry stage is recorded.
Check Size
Not disclosed. The firm does not publish check sizes. Because it joins rounds led by institutional VCs, its checks are likely minority-sized. Treat any number as unknown.
Lead Tendency
Follows. The FAQ states Booz Allen Ventures typically participates in rounds led by institutional VCs or other strategic investors and adds value through strategic engagement rather than leading.
