C2 Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
C2 Ventures (C2V) is a New York-based early-stage venture firm founded in 2014 by Chris Cunningham and Matt Olivo. Its thesis, branded "dirty, dull, and dangerous," is that the most valuable applications of AI-powered SaaS and robotics are not in flashy consumer categories but in overlooked, essential, legacy industries: construction, manufacturing, waste, trucking, forestry, and similar sectors that traditional venture capital tends to ignore. C2V looks for founders who use AI and other emerging technology to dramatically accelerate the functionality, utility, and ROI of software and robotics products built for non-technical end users with established day-to-day workflows. The firm explicitly favors workflow-integrated, intuitive tools that deliver immediate, measurable business impact over open-ended, highly customized AI applications that require significant user sophistication.
Sector Focus
The portfolio spans enterprise SaaS and robotics for legacy industries, including manufacturing and industrial automation (Rigorous, Civ Robotics, Steelhead Technologies), construction and infrastructure (Pavewise, GoodRoads), forestry and field operations (Waldo), healthcare operations and imaging logistics (Medmo, Impilo, Cylerity, Avol), advertising and media operations (Boostr, Magellan AI), legal tech (BriefCatch), utility and grid inspection (Noteworthy AI), and mobility (Driver Technologies, Tarform). C2V also made its first space-sector investment in 2026 (Manifest Space) through its Tributary II fund, extending the "dirty, dull, dangerous" thesis to space-traffic infrastructure.
Stage Focus
C2V backs Pre-Seed through Series A companies, with the firm describing its core focus as "Pre-Series A companies transforming how work gets done across essential industries." The Tributary Fund vehicles are used specifically for earlier, pre-seed-stage investments, while the main Capital Partners funds lead and follow on into Seed and Series A rounds.
Check Size
As of the 2022 Fund II announcement, C2V described making roughly seven investments a year from its $20M fund at around $500K per initial check, with the balance of the fund reserved for follow-on into portfolio companies' Series A rounds. Third-party trackers list a check-size range as low as $100K on some early/angel-style checks up to seven figures on later lead checks (e.g., the $2.5M Pavewise seed it led in 2025).
Lead Tendency
C2V both leads and co-leads deals (it led Pavewise's $2.5M seed round in October 2025 and co-led Cylerity's $4M seed and $24M debt facility alongside HealthX Ventures and Upstream VC) and also participates in syndicates it doesn't lead (e.g., Manifest Space's oversubscribed $1.15M pre-seed alongside NEC X, Hypernova Fund, E2MC Ventures, Marlboro Lane Ventures, and P3A).
Recent Activity
C2V has been actively deploying through 2025 and 2026: it co-led Cylerity's $4M seed and debt facility (October 2025), led Pavewise's $2.5M seed (October 2025), and joined Manifest Space's $1.15M pre-seed as its first space investment via the Tributary II fund (June 2026). Portfolio companies have also seen strong follow-on activity: Steelhead Technologies raised $84M in growth capital from Mainsail Partners and acquired Visual Shop and Bluestreak; BriefCatch raised a $6M Series A and acquired WordRake; Medmo combined with Covera Health; and Boostr executed one of the industry's first agent-to-agent media buys with Vox Media.
Portfolio Highlights
The firm's own site cites 65 (institutional) portfolio companies, $350M+ raised across those companies, and 3 exits, plus a broader "105 founders backed" figure that includes its Angel Investments arm. Notable names include Steelhead Technologies (metal-finishing ERP, $84M growth round), BriefCatch (legal-writing AI, acquired WordRake), Medmo (radiology imaging platform, combined with Covera Health), Rigorous (industrial robotics, RGS OS), Civ Robotics (autonomous construction surveying), Cylerity (healthcare receivables financing), Boostr and Magellan AI (ad-tech measurement), and Manifest Space (space-traffic awareness infrastructure).
Team
- Chris Cunningham, Founding Partner — 20+ years as a founder/operator; co-founded appssavvy (grew to $70M revenue, native mobile/Facebook advertising); named one of Business Insider's "Most Important People in Mobile Advertising" and a two-time EY "Entrepreneur of the Year" finalist; hosts the Superpowers podcast and the "In the Trenches" video series; known publicly as "the honest VC"; LP in Bowery Capital and TechStars.
- Matt Olivo, General Partner, COO & CFO — 20 years in traditional finance (fixed income, project finance, M&A/PE); co-ran a $1B trade-finance portfolio, later under The Carlyle Group; served as CFO of a Carlyle portfolio company; built C2V's fund infrastructure and investment-selection process; sits on portfolio boards including Somatic, Steelhead, and Condoit; BA Colgate, CFA charterholder.
The firm also maintains an "LP Operator Bench" of successful entrepreneurs and executives who contribute time and expertise (not just capital) to portfolio companies alongside the two General Partners.
Decision Process
C2V is a two-GP partnership (Cunningham and Olivo) with an LP Operator Bench that supports diligence and post-investment value creation but the two General Partners drive investment selection.
Founder Preferences
C2V looks for founders solving complex, high-friction problems for non-technical end users in legacy industries, with product built around existing workflows rather than requiring end users to change how they work. The firm emphasizes direct, unvarnished feedback to founders ("no fluff, no sugar coating") and hands-on support around fundraising, cash management, and avoiding common early-stage mistakes.
Geographic Focus
Headquartered in New York (Rye, NY per SEC Form D filings for the fund entity), investing primarily across the United States with no stated regional restriction; LPs include over 125 investors as of 2022, including the State of Connecticut via Connecticut Ventures.
