Corewell Health Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Corewell Health Ventures (CHV) is the corporate venture arm of Corewell Health, the Michigan integrated health system and health plan formed from the Spectrum Health and Beaumont Health merger. Its stated focus is solutions that align with a vision of personalized health, made simple, affordable and exceptional. It pairs investment capital with the operating expertise of an integrated delivery system and insurer, and says it actively partners with portfolio companies to support their success and improve the communities Corewell serves. The site also says it partners with like-minded health care organizations and strategic investors to share expertise and drive scale, leveraging its venture network to drive growth for portfolio companies.
What They Invest In
The home page lists the criteria directly:
- Companies and solutions aligned with Corewell's vision and strategic priorities
- Experienced, in-place management teams
- Well-developed, unique value propositions and business models
- Existing customers and a revenue stream of $1M or more
- Solutions that amplify Corewell's clinical and operational expertise
What They Do Not Invest In
- Class III medical devices
- Pharmaceuticals or biotech
- Pre-revenue companies (marked with an asterisk on the site, so there may be exceptions)
- Solutions outside the mission, vision and values of the system
Stage Focus
The $1M revenue bar puts CHV at the growth end of venture: late seed is possible but Series A through growth rounds are the norm. Recent disclosed activity is large rounds: Cadence raised a $100M Series C in June 2026 (per PitchBook and Goldi listings), and a third-party aggregator puts average disclosed round size near $57.5M across a handful of rounds with reported amounts. These are total round sizes, not CHV check sizes. CHV does not publish its own check size.
Check Size and Fund
CHV does not publish a check size or fund size on its site. One third-party aggregator lists the fund as founded in 2017 with up to $100M; this is unverified and is not used as AUM here. Corewell Health itself reports about $11.0B in cash and investments (June 2026), which is the balance sheet behind the venture arm.
Lead Tendency
Most of the portfolio is held as "indirect investments", meaning CHV participates through funds and syndicates led by other investors (for example Transcarent, Thyme Care, Neuroflow, FOLX, Parsley Health, Livongo). A smaller set of "direct investments" (about 24 companies) is where CHV has a direct relationship, and the site lists Cadence, Rad AI, TigerConnect, AvaSure and others there. Lead tendency is therefore marked as unknown, leaning toward follower or co-investor.
Portfolio Highlights
- Direct (24): Cadence (AI remote care, Series C June 2026), Rad AI (AI radiology), TigerConnect (clinical collaboration), AvaSure (remote patient observation), Override (virtual chronic pain care), Nudj Health, BedConnect, KeyCare (Epic-powered telehealth), Atlas Healthcare Partners (ambulatory surgery centers), plus exits Arivale, Ciitizen, eVideon, Gauss, Lumere, Seaport Diagnostics and Vynca.
- Indirect (60): Transcarent, Thyme Care, FOLX, Parsley Health, Neuroflow, NOCD, OM1, Clarify Health, Summer Health, Scan.com, Brightline, Caraway, Upward Health, Wellvana, plus exits Livongo, Higi, Yaro, SchoolCare, Referral Point and others marked EXITED.
- Strategic partnerships: Co-investment relationships with 7Wire Ventures, BioStar Capital, Civica, Concord Health Partners, Heritage Group, Lakewood Hughes, New Community Transformation Fund and The Academy (Health Management Academy). These are partner funds, not portfolio companies, and are excluded from the portfolio list. Co-developments with Peer Supply and The Patient Company are also direct investments.
Team
- Christian Rische, Managing Director
- Tyler B. Ybema, Principal
- Kristina Emery, Principal
- Maritza Saavedra, Advisor
- Cassi Hofmann, Executive Assistant
The site says the team combines deep experience inside the health system with entrepreneurial backgrounds.
Decision Process
Not published. As a corporate venture arm, decisions likely sit with the managing director and principals with sign-off from Corewell Health leadership. Marked as an investment-committee style process with low confidence.
Founder Preferences
Experienced, in-place management teams with existing customers, and solutions that Corewell can pilot or deploy across its hospitals and health plan. Strategic fit with Corewell's clinical and operational needs is the main filter, and "other ways we work" include pooling resources, de-risking commercialization and collaboration agreements.
Geographic Focus
The firm is tied to Michigan (Grand Rapids and Southeast Michigan), but the portfolio is national with no stated geographic restriction. One partner fund, the New Community Transformation Fund, specifically supports founders of color in West Michigan.
Recent Activity
The only dated recent event found is Cadence's $100M Series C in June 2026. The site's copyright is 2026 and the portfolio pages were refreshed with new logos (Cadence, Rad AI, Scan.com, Summer Health, Thyme Care, When, Vivante, WellTheory), indicating the firm is still active. No portfolio page discloses investment dates or stages, so no stages are stored for portfolio companies.
