Exor Seeds Research
Investment Thesis
Exor Seeds is the early-stage venture capital vehicle of Exor N.V., the Amsterdam-headquartered, Agnelli-family-controlled holding company (Ferrari, Stellantis, Philips, Juventus, The Economist, among others). Launched in 2018 as a way to connect Exor "back to its entrepreneurial roots," the fund's own stated pitch to founders rests on three pillars: a fifth-generation family business that positions itself as builders rather than traders, permanent (non-fund-life-limited) capital that allows a long-term view, and a global cross-industry network available to portfolio founders. Historically the fund backed pre-seed and seed-stage technology companies with fast, founder-friendly terms (an early program offered a standard EUR150,000 equity check with rapid turnaround), later broadening into growth-stage participation alongside other institutional investors.
Sector Focus
Public listings describe Exor Seeds/Exor Ventures' focus areas as fintech, cybersecurity, mobility, digital services, and AI infrastructure. Ora Global (see Team, below) now describes the continuing thesis as AI infrastructure, physical and digital security, industrial automation, supply chain resilience, and energy independence -- consistent with the portfolio's tilt toward deep-tech and infrastructure bets (nuclear energy, autonomous vehicles, foundation models, robotics) rather than pure consumer software.
Stage Focus
The "Seeds" name signals a pre-seed/seed origin, and third-party trackers (PitchBook, EU-Startups) list the fund across pre-seed/seed, Series A/B, and Series C+ activity, i.e., it both originates early checks and follows on at later stages in its strongest portfolio companies (newcleo is the clearest example, with Exor Seeds participating from the 2021 founding round through a 2024 growth round).
Check Size
EU-Startups lists a typical investment of EUR100K-EUR1.5M. Exor's own 2021 annual report describes an initial pre-seed/seed check of EUR150,000. Actual check sizes appear to scale meaningfully for follow-on rounds in conviction names.
Lead Tendency
Third-party fund trackers (VCSheet) explicitly flag Exor Seeds as not typically a lead investor; the newcleo and Ora Global coverage is consistent with a participant/co-investor role alongside other institutional and strategic backers rather than a price-setting lead.
A Material Structural Change (2024)
On 25 October 2024, Exor announced that Noam Ohana -- who had led Exor's early-stage investing since 2017 -- was launching his own venture firm, Ora Global. Per Exor's press release, Ohana "will continue to manage Exor Ventures' EUR640 million portfolio for the benefit of Exor as an independent fund manager." Exor's 2024 Annual Report frames this as Exor deciding to discontinue running its Ventures activities in-house. In practice this means: (1) the historic Exor Seeds/Exor Ventures portfolio (legal entities "Exor Seeds L.P." and "Exor Ventures L.P.", both Delaware/USA-domiciled per Exor's financial statements) continues to exist and be managed, but by Ora Global as an external manager rather than an internal Exor team; and (2) new deal sourcing and branding now runs primarily through Ora Global (ora-global.com), whose own site credits the team, led by Ohana, with having backed 100+ startups including Crusoe, Mistral, Neuralink, Via, Wayve, and Physical Intelligence.
Operationally, the firm's own domain, exorseeds.eu, is currently unreachable (DNS resolves but the server times out on every port-443 connection attempt during this research session) -- consistent with the 2024 wind-down of Exor's in-house Seeds operation. Despite that, press coverage continues to cite "Exor Seeds" by name as an active co-investor as recently as September 2026, and newcleo -- a long-standing Exor Seeds portfolio company -- announced a Nasdaq listing via SPAC merger (with NewHold Investment Corp III) valuing it at $2.4 billion in May 2026, with Exor Seeds named among its long-term backers. The net read: the Exor Seeds/Exor Ventures brand and capital base are still active in the market, but day-to-day management sits with Ora Global, not an in-house Exor team, and F4-OS outreach should likely route through Ora Global/Noam Ohana rather than the legacy exorseeds.eu contact channel.
Recent Activity
- September 2024: newcleo closed a $151M/EUR135M round from new investors alongside existing backer Exor Seeds, relocating HQ to Paris.
- May 2026: newcleo agreed to go public via a SPAC merger valuing it at $2.4B; Exor Seeds cited among its since-2021 investors.
Portfolio Highlights
- newcleo -- advanced (lead-cooled, MOX-fuelled) nuclear reactor developer; Exor Seeds backed the 2021 founding round and has followed on since; newcleo is now headed toward a Nasdaq listing at a $2.4B valuation.
- Crusoe -- AI/compute infrastructure.
- Mistral -- frontier AI/LLM lab.
- Neuralink -- brain-computer interface / neurotech.
- Via -- on-demand public mobility software (Via Transportation).
- Wayve -- autonomous-driving AI.
- Physical Intelligence -- foundation models for robotics.
Team
- Noam Ohana -- led Exor's early-stage venture investing 2017-2024; departed in October 2024 to found Ora Global, which now manages the Exor Ventures/Exor Seeds portfolio as an independent external manager.
- Alim Shaikh -- team member at Ora Global, the entity now operating the portfolio.
- Diego Piacentini (former Amazon/Apple executive) was appointed Exor Seeds Chairman in September 2021; his current involvement post-2024 restructuring is unconfirmed.
Decision Process
Unconfirmed post-restructuring. As a corporate-backed vehicle historically it likely ran through an internal investment process at Exor; since October 2024 capital decisions for the legacy portfolio run through Ora Global as external manager, and it is unclear whether Exor retains an approval role for new commitments.
Founder Preferences
No direct founder-facing guidance could be sourced (the firm's own site is down). Inferred from portfolio composition: technical, deep-tech founders building infrastructure-heavy, capital-intensive businesses (energy, compute, autonomy, robotics) rather than light consumer software.
Geographic Focus
Headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands (Exor's own domicile), with a historically pan-European seed program (an Italy-focused sibling vehicle, VENTO, was spun up in 2022) and a portfolio that is heavily US-weighted at growth stage (Crusoe, Neuralink, Physical Intelligence are all US-based).
