Final Frontier Research
Investment Thesis
Final Frontier is a New Nordic venture capital fund founded in late 2024 by Niels Vejrup Carlsen, a former Seed Capital GP, built around the conviction that Europe has ceded strategic ground in space, defence, and cyber technology and must reclaim it through startup-driven innovation. The fund's manifesto argues that space has become the new geopolitical high ground, that modern warfare now favors cheap, agile, software-defined systems over legacy exquisite platforms, and that Europe's capital markets have chronically underfunded the founders building this technology. Final Frontier backs teams building critical defence, space, and cyber technology across the value chain: drones, autonomous platforms, cybersecurity, satellite systems, and propulsion. The firm is explicit that it invests because it is necessary for European strategic autonomy, not because the category is trendy.
Sector Focus
The firm invests exclusively in three interlocking sectors: Defence, Space, and Cyber. Within defence this spans autonomous drones and counter-drone systems, battlefield intelligence and ISR software, maritime and undersea surveillance, demining and explosive-ordnance detection, personnel training systems, and background-screening/security infrastructure for critical infrastructure operators. Within space, the firm backs in-orbit mobility and propulsion. The portfolio also includes AI-driven conflict prediction and behavioral modeling software used by governments and NGOs.
Stage Focus
Final Frontier focuses on pre-seed and seed stage companies, explicitly preferring teams with working prototypes ready for real-world deployment rather than early science projects. The firm states this is the stage where it can add the most value.
Check Size
Based on disclosed round sizes the firm participated in (ranging from a EUR 1.5M pre-seed in BlinkTroll to co-investments in EUR 5.5M-7.2M seed rounds alongside larger specialist co-investors), Final Frontier writes smaller individual checks within larger syndicates, consistent with a EUR 4.5M debut fund. Typical check size is estimated in the low hundreds of thousands of USD, with the firm frequently syndicating alongside strategic and sector-specialist investors.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. Final Frontier has led or been the sole named investor in smaller pre-seed rounds (BlinkTroll, Dropla, P-Secure) and has co-invested alongside larger specialist or strategic investors in bigger seed rounds (ISPTech with Join Capital; Farsight Vision with Axon and SmartCap; Stormborn with Semco Maritime).
Recent Activity
Final Frontier closed its debut EUR 4.5 million fund, Final Frontier LiftOff, in May 2025, backed by investors including former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Since then, the firm has invested in at least nine disclosed companies plus three not-yet-announced stealth companies (in Czechia/Ukraine, the UK, and France) across Denmark, Norway, Germany, Estonia, Ukraine, and Slovakia. In September 2026, Final Frontier announced it is joining forces with fellow Danish defence-tech fund Myriad to form a single platform targeting a EUR 100 million Fund II (Final Frontier Fund II) focused on pre-seed and seed defence tech across the New Nordics and Ukraine, with a first close targeted by year-end 2026. The combined platform's portfolio stands at 15 companies as of the announcement.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable portfolio companies include BlinkTroll (autonomous soldier-training targets, Danish/Norwegian founders), P-Secure (EU-compliant automated background screening for critical infrastructure), Dropla Tech (AI-driven landmine and ambush-drone detection for Ukraine's supply routes), Stormborn (X-WAVE autonomous surface vessels for maritime surveillance, backed alongside Semco Maritime), ISPTech (in-orbit spacecraft propulsion, Germany), Robotto (GPS-denied drone autonomy software now deployed on Ukraine's front lines), Farsight Vision (Ukrainian-Estonian battlefield intelligence and digital-twin software), G-Next Intelligence (real-time battlefield data platform, Ukraine), and CulturePulse (AI conflict-prediction and population simulation, used by UN agencies and selected for NATO DIANA). Several portfolio companies are actively deployed on the front lines in Ukraine, which the firm treats as a validation environment for combat-proven technology.
Team
The firm is led by Niels V. Carlsen (General Partner), a former engineer and 17-year tech VC with a PhD in Computer Science. Martin Majercin (Founding Member, Platform) is a seasoned founder and creator of Rockets & Radars, a large library of European space and defence founder stories, and also contributed to Norway's first commercial space agency. Jonas Boesen Roiy serves as Technology Advisor, drawing on Danish Navy Special Operations Forces and Microsoft Defense & Intelligence experience. Christian Winther is a Venture Partner with deep-tech and SaaS VC experience. Nima Tisdall serves as Operational Partner. The advisory board includes Ulrik Jørring (Nordic Alpha Partners, Denmark's largest deeptech exit), Dan Hermansen (Royal Danish Airforce officer and MyDefence founder), Niels Buus (former GomSpace CEO), and Christian Andersen (30-year Danish Army/Navy/Special Forces procurement and logistics veteran).
Decision Process
The firm operates as a small partnership rather than a solo-GP structure, with the GP supported by a founding platform member, a technology advisor, a venture partner, an operational partner, and a defence-and-space-focused advisory board that appears to be actively involved in sourcing and diligence given its operational pedigree.
Founder Preferences
Final Frontier explicitly seeks passionate, world-class founders building real technology that works now rather than science projects, teams willing to challenge incumbent prime contractors with more agile approaches, and partners who share the firm's vision of a secure, technologically sovereign Europe. Many portfolio founders have military, defence-industry, or frontline Ukraine operational backgrounds.
Geographic Focus
The firm describes itself as having a "Nordic heart, European reach." It is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and its current portfolio spans Denmark, Norway, Germany, Estonia, Ukraine, Slovakia, and the UK, with the incoming Fund II explicitly targeting the New Nordics and Ukraine.
