Great North Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Great North Ventures (GNV) is a Minneapolis-based early-stage venture firm that describes itself as "operators turned investors." Its stated tagline is "Investing in Execution, Not Hype." The firm backs founders who can turn new technology into measurable business results, with a bias toward capital-efficient companies that show fast ROI and resilient unit economics. Since a 2025 sharpening of focus, GNV invests around two themes: Vertical AI and Embedded Finance.
Vertical AI means industry-specific tools that automate repetitive, high-volume work (invoice coding for property managers, contract extraction in healthcare, claims error flagging, accounting reconciliation) and build proprietary data moats. Embedded Finance means software that integrates payments, cards, wallets, lending or insurance into a workflow, creating new revenue streams (interchange, lending fees, float) and stickier customers. The firm's argument is that the two pair well: Vertical AI creates the workflow and the data, Embedded Finance monetizes the workflow and locks in the customer.
Stage Focus
GNV invests early, pre-seed through Series A, with seed as the core. Third-party profiles put initial checks at roughly $250K to $1M, with follow-ons in portfolio companies. The firm's own site says only "early stage capital efficient tech startups"; the check-size range is from a third-party profile (Superscout) and is lower confidence.
Lead Tendency
GNV both leads and joins rounds. It led a $1M seed in HLRBO (Brainerd, MN, April 2024) alongside Comeback Capital and Gopher Angels, and led a $2M seed for NROC Security (September 2025). It also led the seed round for Inhabitr.
Recent Activity
- Fund II ($40M) closed in May 2022; Fund I (about $24M, closed 2018) is fully deployed except for limited follow-ons. The firm cites about $70M in AUM and more than 50 investments.
- Sept 2025: led $2M seed for NROC Security (secure employee use of GenAI).
- Apr 2024: led $1M seed for HLRBO.
- Published its Vertical AI + Embedded Finance strategy essay and a founder-lessons interview (Oct 2025), and runs a portfolio news series on fintech fundraises.
- Fund II appears to still be deploying. No Fund III announcement was found.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio page lists 48 companies tagged Fund I, Fund II or Exited. Embedded finance names include OneCarNow, Micruity, Branch, IRALOGIX, Waterlily and LendAPI. Vertical AI and software names include Nested Knowledge, Yardstik, EnsoData and Inhabitr (AI-powered B2B furniture procurement). Exited companies listed: EmpowerU, TeamGenius, Zapinfo, 2ndKitchen, Clinician Nexus, Zenlord, Structural, Misty Robotics, Plyo, Pepr and Coverlease. The firm points to WithMe as an example of "seed-strapping," a founder who raised the least capital necessary.
Team
- Robert (Rob) Weber, Founder and Managing Partner
- Ryan Weber, Founder and Managing Partner
- Grant Gibson, Principal
- Joseph Daher, Senior Associate
Rob and Ryan are twin brothers who started building web businesses as teenagers in the 1990s. They bootstrapped Freeze.com into W3i (later NativeX), a mobile ad tech company that reached $30M in revenue by 2005 and was acquired in 2016. They launched GNV in 2017. Both studied computer science.
Decision Process
Two founding managing partners; the firm operates as a small partnership. Rob says he asks in nearly every first call how much capital the company has used to get where it is, and looks at what was accomplished with that capital rather than just revenue. No formal committee process is published.
Founder Preferences
- Founders with unique insight ("Why you?"), either technology-driven or market-driven
- Strong preference for a technical cofounder or early technical team member
- Obsession with unit economics and KPIs over fundraising totals
- Capital efficiency: small early spend to master one scalable channel before scaling spend
- Founder-market fit and an under-used market tailwind where incumbents are slow to adopt
Geographic Focus
Midwest-rooted (Minneapolis, with investments in Chicago, Minnesota and the broader Midwest) but invests nationwide. Portfolio companies are in the US, with several relocated to California.
Network
GNV runs the North Star Network, a community of investors and operators offering portfolio founder sessions, networking events and introductions.
Gaps
No stage is stored per portfolio company (the site gives only fund labels). Most portfolio domains are left null because the page gives no links for them. Fund II deployment pace and any Fund III plans are unconfirmed.
