Molten Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Molten Ventures (formerly Draper Esprit) is a publicly listed, London-headquartered venture capital firm with a 20-year track record backing Europe's most ambitious founders. The firm positions itself as bringing "expertise, networks, and capital" to scale technology companies from Series A through pre-IPO, framing its mission as helping the founders and innovators driving Europe's technology transformation "make more possible." As a publicly traded platform (LSE: GROW), Molten has permanent capital that lets it hold positions across a company's full growth arc rather than being constrained by a traditional fund's investment period.
Sector Focus
Molten organizes its thesis around four pillars:
- SaaS and Enterprise Software
- Deeptech (space, quantum computing, advanced hardware)
- Healthtech (medical devices, AI-driven clinical platforms, biotech)
- Consumer Software
Within those pillars, the portfolio shows particular density in fintech and payments infrastructure (Revolut, Wise, Thought Machine, Ledger), space and satellite technology (ICEYE, Isar Aerospace), quantum computing (Riverlane), and AI-native healthtech and biotech (Qureight, IMU Biosciences, Endomag).
Stage Focus
Molten typically makes its first investment at Series A or Series B, then follows on through Series C, D, growth equity, and pre-IPO rounds. Unlike a traditional closed-end fund, its listed structure lets it continue backing winners well past the stages most VCs exit at, which shows up clearly in its history with ICEYE and Isar Aerospace.
Check Size
Check sizes scale with round stage, from a few million euros/pounds at Series A/B up to tens of millions at growth stage. Recent disclosed checks include a roughly EUR30M participation in Isar Aerospace's EUR270M Series D and a lead position in Qureight's $20M Series B. The firm deployed GBP89M in FY26 across its listed balance sheet, plus a further GBP22M through its managed EIS/VCT funds.
Lead Tendency
Molten both leads and follows depending on stage and syndicate composition: it led Qureight's Series B and IMU Biosciences' Series A (co-lead with IQ Capital), while taking a syndicate position in Isar Aerospace's Series D behind General Atlantic-style growth investors.
Recent Activity
FY26 (ending March 2026) was an active year: the firm made roughly 10 new investments in 2025 and continued deploying into 2026, including a $20M Series B for Qureight (AI-powered lung/heart imaging for clinical trials, July 2026), a $53M Series A for IMU Biosciences (immune-system decoding, June 2026), and a EUR270M Series D for Isar Aerospace (European launch vehicles, June 2026). The firm also realized GBP22M of secondary proceeds from ICEYE's Series F in June 2026, an event that lifted the carrying value of its ICEYE stake to GBP317M. Gross portfolio fair value grew 13% year-over-year to GBP1,525M.
Portfolio Highlights
Molten's portfolio includes seven unicorns, among them ICEYE, One Football, and Thought Machine. Marquee outcomes include Wise (IPO'd near GBP9bn), UiPath (IPO'd at $35.8bn), and Trustpilot (IPO'd at a GBP1bn market cap). Active growth-stage names span Revolut, Ledger, Aircall, Endomag, Riverlane, HiveMQ, causaLens, and ModoEnergy, alongside younger Series A/B names like Qureight, IMU Biosciences, and MOSTLY AI.

Decision Process
Molten operates as a partnership with sector- and geography-focused partners (including a dedicated "Molten East" team covering Central and Eastern Europe) and a separate secondaries team, reflecting a multi-strategy platform rather than a single solo-GP fund.
Founder Preferences
Molten backs technical, ambitious founders building category-defining technology companies out of Europe, with a stated preference for teams that can scale into global category leaders rather than regional players. Its deepest conviction shows up in deeptech and infrastructure founders (space, quantum, AI infrastructure) willing to take on capital-intensive, long-horizon bets.
Geographic Focus
Molten is explicitly Europe-focused, headquartered in London with a dedicated team (Molten East) for Central and Eastern Europe, and portfolio companies concentrated in the UK, Germany, France, the Nordics, and CEE.
