Monte Carlo Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Monte Carlo Capital (MCC) is a Monaco-based early-stage venture firm founded in 2009 by Ian Sosso, a former senior investment banker turned angel investor. The firm says it backs founders changing how we live, work, move, build, connect and create, from AI to SpaceTech. Two sector buckets are stated on the site. The first is Deep Tech: founders who turn frontier science into industry-defining companies. The second is Digitize, Automate, Optimize: founders who use technology to create 10x efficiency gains in industrial and service sectors. The fund press release names DeepTech, AI, SpaceTech and enterprise software as the focus. Ian Sosso says MCC only invests where it sees a credible path to a multi-billion-dollar outcome.
Stage Focus
Fund II invests primarily at Seed, and selectively at Pre-Seed and Series A. The website lists Pre-Seed, Seed and Series A as the stages.
Check Size
The fund writes $350K to $500K tickets. SPVs written alongside the fund run $500K to $1.5M. MCC says it has invested up to $7M in a single company over multiple rounds through SPVs, and that SPVs can reach up to three times the fund's commitment.
Lead Tendency
MCC describes itself as a value-added co-investor that invests alongside leading VCs. Ian Sosso previously led more than 50 deals and syndicates as an angel, up to Series B, and was named Best European Angel Investor by EBAN in 2019. Since Fund I the firm has moved from lead investor to co-investor, so the lead tendency is best read as follows.
Recent Activity
- October 2026: first close of Fund II at 13 million euros ($15 million), targeting 26 million euros ($30 million). Fund II had already made five investments, and most Fund I LPs recommitted.
- October 2026: portfolio company Jeevy Fabrication raised a Series A led by Standard Capital. MCC backed it at seed in 2025, as the founders came out of Y Combinator.
- Fund I closed at over 11 million euros in 2025, with 30 companies. The 30th and final company was added at the end of 2025.
- Fund II first investments include Acceler8, Apollo Atomics, FRAME, Klay and Scout AI.
- MCC launches an average of 7 SPVs a year.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio page lists 46 companies across the Angel, Fund I and Fund II groupings. Highlights named by the firm: Starcloud, described as the fastest YC company ever to reach unicorn status and now valued at about 2 billion euros; Scout AI, reportedly the largest DefenceTech Series A in US history; AssetWatch (predictive maintenance, with MCC leading its first four financings as an angel, followed by a Series A led by G2, a Series B led by Wellington and a Series C led by Viking); Jeevy Fabrication (AI-driven fabrication and welding for aerospace and infrastructure); Rollstack; Borderless AI. Exits shown on the page include Simba Sleep, Bonti and Capture.
Team
- Ian Sosso, Founder and Managing Partner. Previously at JPMorgan, UBS and HSBC, then Regional Managing Director and Head of Capital Markets in Asia for Commerzbank. Board member of EBAN and the Monaco Venture Capital Association. Former adjunct professor of venture capital at the International University of Monaco.
- Lorenzo Quinto, Investment Analyst.
- Thomas Bianconi, Investment Intern.
Decision Process
The firm is run by one managing partner with a small team in Monaco. It screens more than 2,500 opportunities a year and invests in about 12 of them. The decision process is therefore best treated as a solo GP model. Fund II targets 34 to 36 investments. The fund is Luxembourg-registered and open to professional investors in Europe and accredited investors in the US.
Founder Preferences
Technical and scientific founders with credible paths to very large outcomes. Examples in the portfolio include a former SpaceX engineer (Jeevy) and YC-backed teams. MCC wants to get onto cap tables early, alongside leading VCs, and keep backing its best companies in later rounds through SPVs. It also offers founders global access, introductions across Europe, the US and Asia, and help securing the next round from its VC ecosystem.
Geographic Focus
US and Europe. The firm is based in Monaco, and its portfolio spans the US, Europe, Brazil, Singapore and elsewhere. Several portfolio companies are US-based YC alumni.
Gaps
The portfolio page gives no company domains and no round-level stage per company, so those fields are left empty rather than guessed. Ian Sosso's LinkedIn URL and team emails were not found on the site.
