Omnivore Research
Investment Thesis
Omnivore is a Mumbai-based impact venture firm that backs entrepreneurs building resilient agrifood systems for a volatile world. Co-founded in 2010 by Mark Kahn and Jinesh Shah (launching its first fund in 2011), it pioneered agritech venture investing in India. The thesis is that India's farmers, rural households and rural MSMEs ("Bharat") are badly served by fragmented value chains, and that technology, new science and better financing can raise rural incomes while reducing environmental harm. Omnivore describes four investment themes on its site: Digital Value Chains (tech-enabled platforms organising fragmented ecosystems of farmers, rural households and MSMEs), Emerging Technologies (novel science-based innovations that create impact at scale and speed decarbonisation), Inclusive Fintech (financial solutions for underserved rural communities and MSMEs), and Sustainable Brands (category-defining, responsibly sourced consumer products driving the future of food and agriculture).
In an August 2026 Mint interview, Kahn said most remaining Fund III capital will go into deep science and agrifood consumer brands, with deployment expected to finish by mid-2027 as the firm prepares for Fund IV. He pointed to physical AI, robotics, drones and high-protein foods as areas of rising interest.
Stage Focus
Primarily pre-seed, seed and Series A, with meaningful follow-on participation into Series B and C rounds for portfolio companies (for example Scimplify's Series C in October 2026 and Sid's Farm's pre-Series B in July 2026). Third-party profiles list a typical initial check of roughly $1M to $5M; this is a secondary-source figure, not stated by the firm.
Lead Tendency
Both. Omnivore led Arboreal's $24M Series A (alongside EAAA Alternatives, with Rainmatter participating) and also participates as an existing investor in rounds led by others, such as Sid's Farm alongside Narotam Sekhsaria Family Office.
Fund Status and Recent Activity
Omnivore manages three venture funds. Fund III, the Omnivore Agritech and Climate Sustainability Fund, held a first close of $150M in June 2023 and is reported at about ₹1,800 crore. LinkedIn describes roughly USD 275M under management across two venture funds, which may predate Fund III's later closes. The firm is actively deploying: Tracxn counts six investments in 2026 so far, the latest being Arboreal (Series A), Sid's Farm, Scimplify (Series C, October 2026) and Manam Chocolate (Series A, June 2026). BASF Venture Capital is an LP in Fund II. The firm also co-founded BioWave, an annual India bioeconomy conference with Nucleate India, SOSV and C-CAMP (second edition held mid-2026, about 350 attendees).
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio lists 35 companies spanning agri-inputs, farmer platforms, rural fintech, dairy, aquaculture, climate and deeptech. Notable names include DeHaat (full-stack farmer platform), Pixxel (hyperspectral earth-imaging satellites), Varaha (nature-based carbon credits; a $30M Mirova carbon financing agreement in 2025, named a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer), Ecozen, Stellapps, Niqo Robotics, Intello Labs, Fasal, Animall, Aquaconnect, Arya, Scimplify, Optimo Capital and Manam Chocolate. Exits shown on the site: Barrix (to Sumitomo), Eruvaka (to Nutreco) and M.I.T.R.A (to Mahindra).
Team
Mark Kahn (Managing Partner and co-founder; previously at Godrej Agrovet), Jinesh Shah (Managing Partner and co-founder; previously CFO at Nexus Venture Partners), Reihem Roy (Partner), Abhilash Sethi (Partner), Karan Keswani (Principal), Aaushi Sharma (Principal), Ashita Patodia (Senior Associate) and Priyal Jain (Associate).
Decision Process
A partnership model. Altss reports the two founding managing partners lead the investment committee, with Kahn focused on sourcing, portfolio strategy and LP relations. Inbound pitches come through a Google form linked from the site.
Founder Preferences
Founders building for smallholder farmers, rural MSMEs and rural consumers in India, often with a science or technology edge, and with measurable impact (income, resilience, emissions). The firm increasingly favours deep science (biologicals, novel ingredients, materials, robotics, satellites) and branded consumer products with controlled value chains from farm to shelf.
Geographic Focus
India first. A secondary source lists Southeast Asia as well, but the firm's own site and portfolio are India-centred. Omnivore is not a fit for founders outside India or outside agrifood, climate, rural fintech and related deeptech.
Gaps
Exact check size, final Fund III size and per-company investment dates are not published on the firm site. Domains for portfolio companies were left null for server-side discovery.
