Serra Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Serra Ventures is a Champaign, Illinois-based venture capital firm founded in 2008, now in its 18th year of investing in early-stage deep technology. The firm's current thesis centers squarely on agricultural technology ("AgTech") and food technology, built around three converging forces the team cites repeatedly in its own materials: millennial consumers demanding transparency and sustainability across the ag and food supply chain, a generational leadership transition on U.S. farms (roughly 70% of farms are changing hands to more tech-savvy operators), and rising government and corporate capital chasing climate-aligned agriculture. Serra backs founders building end-to-end operational solutions that improve farmer ROI rather than pure branding plays, with particular emphasis on food safety and traceability, sustainable and regenerative farming practices, and climate-resilient agriculture. Historically the firm was a generalist Midwest deep-tech investor (fintech, cybersecurity, legal tech, healthtech), and legacy portfolio companies from that era remain active, but new capital is now concentrated in AgTech/FoodTech through dedicated fund vehicles.
Stage Focus
Serra invests at the early stage, with a stated preference for capital-efficient teams that already have product-market fit, paying customer references, and defensible technology or patent positions. The firm has backed more than 100 companies across 20 states over its history, suggesting a broad seed-to-Series A sweet spot, though specific check-size bands are not published on the firm's site.
Check Size
Not publicly disclosed. Fund vehicles (see below) imply typical initial checks in the low-to-mid six figures with follow-on reserve capacity, consistent with a seed/Series A-focused strategy, but this should be treated as an inference rather than a confirmed figure.
Lead Tendency
Mixed signal. Coverage of the Volur investment ("Serra's newest investment," April 2024) suggests Serra can originate and lead smaller rounds, while the July 2026 Leo Cancer Care Series D ($65M, led by Yu Galaxy) shows Serra also participates as a syndicate member in larger, later rounds alongside other institutional investors. Treat lead tendency as unconfirmed pending direct research.
Recent Activity
Serra has been active through 2025 and into 2026: the firm participated in Leo Cancer Care's $65M Series D (July 2026, led by Yu Galaxy) for an upright radiotherapy platform; portfolio company VeriSIM Life had a strong July 2026 with its CEO named to Inc.'s Female Founders 500 list and a formalized FDA/NCTR research collaboration; Fork Farms partnered with Feeding America and Rockwell Automation to launch the Clock Tower Farms hydroponic facility (April 2026); and Opendorse and Mast Reforestation both made Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies 2026 list (April 2026). On the fund side, Serra launched the Serra-Grondex Ag & Food Tech Fund II in early 2024, targeting $100M with over $22M committed at initial close, focused on regenerative farming, precision agriculture, and climate-aligned food systems.
Portfolio Highlights
Active AgTech/FoodTech portfolio includes Bonsai Robotics (AI-first autonomy for agriculture, featured in Forbes), Swarm Engineering (AI-based ag automation, AgTech Breakthrough Award winner), iUNU (AgTech IoT platform), Fork Farms, HerdDogg, Breedr, Barn2Door, Earth Optics, Mast Reforestation, VeriSIM Life, and CRISPR QC. Notable legacy exits include Network Perception (acquired by Dragos, October 2024), Evisort (acquired by Workday, October 2024), and Surefyre (acquired by VertaFore, November 2024). Other historical exits span 640 Labs, Agrible, Cardea Bio, Label Insight, Personify, Tank Utility, TimeDoc Health, and Vytelle, reflecting the firm's earlier generalist deep-tech mandate. Serionix and Paystand have each made multiple "fastest-growing" and "top fintech" industry lists in recent years.

Decision Process
Multiple managing partners (Hoerr, Beard, Schultz) plus a bench of venture partners and an active advisory board points to a partnership-style decision process rather than a solo-GP structure. Managing partners are described as former venture-backed CEOs who provide hands-on coaching, deal structuring support, and exit guidance to portfolio companies.
Founder Preferences
Serra states a preference for strong founding teams with deep industry or technical expertise, capital-efficient business models, demonstrated product-market fit, real customer references, and strong patent or technology moats. The firm markets itself as an active, hands-on partner rather than passive capital, citing portfolio testimonials about deal structuring and exit support.
