Orange Collective Research
Investment Thesis
Orange Collective bills itself as "the AI-native YC alumni fund." It invests exclusively in Y Combinator companies, with a specific focus on the next AI stack: physical infrastructure for AI, developer tools and frameworks, computer-use and agentic coding tools, frontier evals, vertical AI agents, and full-stack AI applications. The firm was founded in 2022 by YC alumni and formalized its main institutional vehicle (Fund I) with a first close in January 2025. Its differentiated angle is an internally built "AI-native platform" that automates traditional venture analyst work — researching founder backgrounds, drafting investment memos, and surfacing thematic clusters across every incoming YC batch — so that partners can focus on judgment calls and founder relationships rather than diligence grunt work.
Stage Focus
Orange Collective invests at the earliest possible point in a YC company's life: immediately upon batch launch, competing for allocation before traditional pre-seed/seed rounds close and before outside investors have priced the round. Nearly the entire portfolio is pre-seed and seed stage YC companies, captured within the same batch cycle (e.g., W25, S25, F25, P26, W26 badges recur throughout the portfolio).
Check Size
Exact check sizes for the current $40M Fund I are not publicly disclosed. Predecessor per-batch vehicles (S23 Orange Fund, W24 Orange Fund, etc., raised via Wefunder/Capitalize rolling funds) targeted $25K-$100K checks across 20-40 investments per batch, which is consistent with a high-volume, small-check strategy designed to get broad exposure to every promising company in a given YC cohort rather than concentrated, large positions.
Lead Tendency
Orange Collective typically participates rather than leads. Its structural advantage is speed and access to the full YC batch, not price-setting or board leadership — it takes allocation in rounds that are usually led by traditional seed/Series A investors (as with Starcloud's Series A, led by Benchmark and EQT Ventures, where Orange Collective was an existing early backer rather than the round leader).
Recent Activity
Fund I has been actively deploying on a near-weekly cadence tied to YC batch releases, publishing a dated investment memo for each new portfolio addition. Recent additions include Exosat (sovereign satellite infrastructure, Jul 2026), Apollo Atomics (compact nuclear reactors, Jun 2026), Akkari (autonomous customer operations, Jun 2026), Superset (AI software-factory platform, May 2026), and Sazabi (AI-native observability, May 2026). The standout portfolio event of 2026 was Starcloud's $170M Series A at a $1.1B valuation (led by Benchmark and EQT Ventures, announced March 30, 2026), making Starcloud the fastest company in YC history to reach unicorn status — 17 months after finishing the program.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio spans roughly 115 YC companies since inception, concentrated in AI infrastructure and applied AI: Mastra (JS framework for AI agents, from the Gatsby team), Browser Use (open-source web agent project, 50k GitHub stars), Cua (cloud desktops for AI agents), Autumn (billing infrastructure for AI), Airweave (open-source context retrieval for agents), Unsiloed AI (multimodal document parsing API), Didit (identity/fraud infrastructure), General Legal (AI-native law firm for high-growth companies), Magnetic (AI tax preparer for CPA firms), and Starcloud (space-based AI data centers, the portfolio's marquee outcome to date).

Decision Process
A small partnership (four GPs/Managing Partners) supported by a bench of venture partners and an AI-native research platform that pre-assembles diligence for every new YC batch company. Partners then make the final call on allocation.
Founder Preferences
Orange Collective's entire addressable universe is YC alumni founders — there is no path to investment without having gone through a YC batch. Within that pool, it skews toward technical founders building AI-native infrastructure, developer tooling, and vertical AI agents rather than pure consumer or non-AI businesses.
Geographic Focus
No explicit geographic mandate beyond "YC company," which skews the portfolio heavily toward the US (particularly the Bay Area), though YC itself accepts international founders and the portfolio includes globally-oriented infrastructure plays (e.g., Bolna AI, built for India's voice AI market).
