Owl Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Owl Capital Group describes itself as a team of experienced entrepreneurs and investors who bring the power of their network to help portfolio companies change the world. The firm's website carries no formal thesis statement. Third-party profiles describe an early-stage and growth investor in digital health, fintech and enterprise technology (Altss, updated July 2026), and the firm's current search-listing text adds AI, health and frontier technologies. The portfolio bears this out: enterprise and security software (Exabeam, Silverfort, Cato, Indegy, Interos, TruStar), fintech (Ellevest, Finix, Chime, Divvy, Coinbase), digital and consumer health (Amino, Inito, Hint, Salvo Health, Solv, Owlet, Predict, Probably Genetic), and workforce and marketplace products (Gusto, Writer, WorkWhile, Worklete, The Mom Project, Roofstock).
Stage Focus
The firm states it has taken part in over 600 financings. Altss describes direct checks from seed through late stage. The site does not name a stage focus, so stage preferences are inferred from the self-reported record and the mix of early companies (Deciduous Therapeutics, Preczn, Bauble) and later-stage ones (Applecart, which raised a $100M Series C led by Blackstone Growth; Writer; Gusto).
Check Size
Not disclosed anywhere on the site or in the third-party profiles reviewed. No check range is submitted.
Lead Tendency
Unknown. Nothing public says whether Owl leads or follows. The scale of the financing count suggests heavy participation in syndicates alongside other investors.
Recent Activity
The homepage news carousel lists: Writer named to Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies list for 2026; the SpaceX IPO; Applecart's $100M Series C led by Blackstone Growth; Alethea's $20M Series B; the Chime IPO (June 2025); and OhmConnect's merger into Renew Home (December 2023, with Google Nest Renew). The homepage also congratulates Chris Britt and Ryan King on the Chime IPO. The site names no new fund and the fund size is not public, so fund status is recorded as unknown.
Portfolio Highlights
The site separates Current and Realized companies. Current companies include Writer, Gusto, Exabeam, Silverfort, Ellevest, Finix, Roofstock, Shipwell, Applecart, Alethea Group, Cato, Certn and others, 40 in total. Realized companies named on the site include Chime (IPO), Coinbase, SpaceX, Divvy, Owlet, Stem, Cipher, Balena, Early Bird, Lemonada, OhmConnect and Troops, with several further realized logos that carry no legible name. The firm claims 10 IPOs, 26 M&A exits and over 600 financings. These totals are self-reported and have grown over time (an older LinkedIn description says 7 IPOs and 23 exits).
Team
- Jennifer Fonstad, Co-Founder and Managing Partner: serial entrepreneur and venture investor with about 30 years of experience. Managing Director at Draper Fisher Jurvetson for 17 years, where she joined as a Kauffman Fellow in 1997. Co-founded Aspect Ventures in 2014 with Theresia Gouw (the pair split in 2019, and Gouw started Acrew Capital). Launched Owl Capital Group in 2019. Co-founder of the Broadway Angels network. Board member of the Mastercard Foundation. Twice on the Forbes Midas List. Georgetown BS and Harvard Business School MBA. Earlier investments include Athenahealth, Flurry, NanoString, Sutro Bio and The RealReal.
The website names no other investors. LinkedIn lists two employees, and Altss notes the firm does not publish its partners or investment committee. Additional team members could not be verified.
Decision Process
Not disclosed. With a single named investor and a small team, decisions plausibly run through Fonstad, but this is not confirmed.
Founder Preferences
The firm says 80% of its portfolio founders come from a diverse background and almost 40% are women. It was the first investment firm to commit $1,000,000 (5% of its carry profit pool) to the communities where its entrepreneurs live and work. Honesty, integrity and collaboration are its stated operating principles.
Geographic Focus
The firm's address is Palm Beach, FL; Altss lists a corporate office in Menlo Park, CA. Portfolio companies are mostly US-based, with some international (Certn in Canada, Silverfort and Indegy in Israel, Balena in the UK). No stated geographic limits.
Gaps
Check size, fund size and AUM, lead tendency, decision process and the wider team are not public. Portfolio stage at investment is not disclosed for any company, so none is submitted. Portfolio entries come from logo file names on the Our Companies page; domains are left empty unless the site linked to the company directly.
