QBE Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
QBE Ventures is the corporate venture development and investment arm of QBE Insurance Group, one of the largest global commercial insurers. Its stated aim is "reimagining insurance from the outside in": investing in, and building alongside, early stage technology companies that could reshape the insurance industry. The site names three focus areas: Resilience, Data & AI, and support for QBE's Growth Strategy. CEO James Orchard has described the thesis as working closely with QBE's own business and investing in strategic partnerships that can accelerate the group's core priorities, rather than building a disconnected financial portfolio. A QBE Ventures leader has also said publicly that the model is not to build a portfolio of 30 companies and lob them over the fence to QBE.
What They Do
The firm describes three activities: explore emerging trends in technology and financial services, build and scale new ventures (for example Mitti with SafetyCulture and the Aurora embedded underwriting product), and invest in solutions with the potential to scale globally. It works through direct investments in start-ups and venture funds, strategic partnerships with start-ups and technology experts, and new venture development that creates digital businesses from the ground up using QBE's assets and scale.
Stage Focus
The website lists stage as early to mid. Recent deals include participation in a $43M round for Lazarus AI (November 2026), repeat backing of a company it first invested in during 2024. Several holdings (Snorkel AI, HyperScience, Clara Analytics, Reserv) are growth-stage companies, so the real range runs wider than seed.
Check Size
The firm states an average check size of $2M to $5M and a worldwide investment reach.
Lead Tendency
The public record shows mostly participation alongside other investors (for example with State Farm Ventures in Lazarus AI). Leadership is not stated, so lead tendency is recorded as unknown.

Decision Process
As a corporate venture arm, decisions sit inside QBE's governance and are tied to strategic fit with QBE's business units. Commercial partnership with QBE is part of the pitch, so a warm path through QBE business lines is likely to matter.
Founder Preferences
Founders building insurtech, cyber risk, climate and resilience, claims, underwriting automation, and applied AI and data tools that QBE can adopt or co-develop. Strategic commercial relevance to QBE is a gating criterion.
Geographic Focus
Worldwide. Portfolio spans the US, UK and Australia. QBE Insurance Group is headquartered in Sydney; QBE Ventures operates globally.
