State Farm Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
State Farm Ventures is the corporate venture arm of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, based in Bloomington, Illinois. Its stated goal is to find better ways to meet the needs of State Farm's very diverse customer base, so it invests in companies that disrupt conventional modes of operation and help people live smarter and safer lives. The tagline is "Go beyond possible." This is a strategic investor first: alignment with State Farm's businesses (underwriting, claims, mobility, IoT, home safety and resilience) is the core filter.
Focus Areas
The firm's site lists eight focus areas:
- AI
- Mobility and Safety
- Aerial Data
- Quantum
- Home Safety and Services
- Real Estate Tech
- InsurTech and FinTech
- Telematics
The portfolio reflects this closely: telematics (Cambridge Mobile Telematics, CarIQ, Nexar), aerial and property data (Cape Analytics, Hover), home safety (Canary, Whisker Labs, Liveoak), autonomous mobility and sensing (May Mobility, Owl Autonomous Imaging, PreAct Technologies, Phiar), and insurance workflow (Snapsheet, Proof, Insurevision, Get Covered, Elpha Secure).
Stage Focus
The site says the firm considers investments at any development stage. Recent activity (for example participation in a Skan AI Series C reported by CB Insights for August 2026) shows it does join later rounds, typically alongside other investors.
Check Size and Fund
No check size is published. State Farm Ventures announced an initial $100M fund in September 2018 and expanded it to $200M in January 2022, when it reported 21 investments to date. Third-party databases now count roughly 32 to 46 investments depending on the source. AUM is not disclosed beyond the fund commitment, so it is left unset.
Lead Tendency
Nothing public says the firm leads rounds. As a strategic investor it is usually a participant or strategic co-investor, so lead tendency is marked unknown.
Collaborative Capital
The firm pitches three things beyond money: deep domain expertise from over a century in insurance, risk management and customer service; support for pilots and access to industry experts; and access to enterprise-scale resources. Pilots and commercial collaboration with State Farm business units are a central part of the offer, and the contact form asks founders to describe their collaboration idea with State Farm.

Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio page shows 25 operating companies plus two venture funds (The Westly Group and Nine Four Ventures), which are fund commitments and not counted as portfolio companies. Highlights include Cambridge Mobile Telematics, May Mobility, Cape Analytics, Hover, HopSkipDrive, Snapsheet, Whisker Labs and Proof. Skan AI appears in third-party data but not on the firm's page.
Decision Process
Not public. As a corporate investor, decisions likely run through an internal committee with business-unit input. Inbound goes to a shared ventures office mailbox listed on the site.
Founder Preferences
The site describes a founder-first approach aimed at mission-driven startups that test ideas, gain exposure and accelerate growth. Founders with a clear fit to State Farm's customer problems, and who want a pilot with a large insurer, are the best match.
Geographic Focus
No geographic restriction is stated. The portfolio is mostly US-based with some international companies (Nexar, Lumai).
