Redbud Brands Research
Investment Thesis
Redbud Brands is an Austin, Texas and Los Angeles/Venice, California-based consumer brand platform that combines capital with hands-on operating expertise to create, accelerate, and scale "better-for-you" consumer packaged goods (CPG) businesses. Founded in 2020 by Brian Goldberg (with early involvement from co-founder John Ferrari, who served as General Counsel from January 2020 to January 2024), the firm's thesis is that emerging consumer brands succeed faster with a dedicated shared-services layer of operators alongside capital, rather than capital alone. Redbud maintains an in-house team of roughly 15 operating executives across supply chain, finance, growth marketing, and retail strategy who plug directly into portfolio brands.
Redbud explicitly spans three distinct investment/operating models under one platform:
- Create (Redbud Studio): Builds new consumer brands from scratch in-house, co-founding with entrepreneurs and category experts.
- Accelerate: Invests in earlier-stage brands generating below $5M in revenue that need capital plus operational expertise to reach scale.
- Scale: Provides growth capital ($10M-$100M checks, with syndication capacity for larger rounds) to established consumer brands generating $20M+ in revenue.
Stage Focus
Redbud's stage focus is unusually broad because of its three-pronged model: pre-revenue brand creation (Studio), early-stage/sub-$5M-revenue acceleration, and growth-stage ($20M+ revenue) scale investments. It is not a traditional seed-stage VC; its "Accelerate" bucket functions closest to seed/Series A, while "Scale" functions as growth equity.
Check Size
- Scale stage: Explicitly stated as $10M-$100M, with the ability to syndicate for larger transactions.
- Accelerate stage: Check sizes are not publicly disclosed; deals appear smaller and often paired with in-kind operating support rather than pure capital.
- The firm itself raised a $46M financing round in May 2022 (backed by investors including Satori Capital, and reportedly Chaucer Global, Morrison Seger, Sands Capital, and VMG Partners) to fund its studio-and-accelerate strategy; total capital raised into the platform is reported at roughly $66-67M as of mid-2026.
Lead Tendency
Both. In the Create model Redbud is effectively the sole initial capital/operating partner; in Accelerate and Scale it invests alongside co-investors and strategic advisors and can lead or participate depending on the deal (e.g., it "attracted co-investors and strategic advisors" for Cheddies rather than leading solo).
Recent Activity
Redbud has been actively deploying across its three programs in 2024-2026:
- December 2024: Investment in Bawi, an Austin-based sparkling agua fresca beverage brand (drinkbawi.com).
- July 2025: Studio brand Levels partnered with actor/influencer Brent Rivera to launch a new "4D" corn-and-potato snack line.
- Prior activity includes the April 2023 Roy Choi collaboration for Studio brand TSUMo Snacks (cannabis-infused snacks) and the November 2022 Veterans Day launch of Operation Good Boy, a veteran-founded pet products brand.

Studio/Incubation brands: Operation Good Boy (exited to a strategic buyer), Wellcore (wellness/longevity platform, exited to a strategic buyer), Best Behavior (adult cereal), Levels (salty snacking), Evident (women's health and wellness), TSUMo Snacks, Bawi.
Accelerator brands: Obvi (collagen/weight-loss supplements), Medicine Mama (organic feminine care), Cheddies (regenerative-cheese crackers), Cay Skin (suncare), SKOKA (nicotine pouches).

Decision Process
Redbud operates as an integrated partnership/operating team rather than a solo-GP structure, with dedicated Investments (Charles Davis, VP of Investments) and Operating Partner functions feeding into decisions chaired by Brian Goldberg and President Anish Sheth.
Founder Preferences
Redbud's Cheddies case study shows a pattern: founders of pre-revenue or early-revenue "better-for-you" CPG brands who need supply chain reorganization, product reformulation, retail broker relationships, and board-level CPG operating experience (Redbud installed SkinnyPop founders as advisors and Anish Sheth as board chair for Cheddies). The firm favors founders willing to accept significant hands-on involvement from Redbud's shared-services team rather than purely passive capital.
Geographic Focus
Primarily United States, headquartered across Austin, Texas and Los Angeles/Venice, California, with portfolio brands concentrated in US CPG retail and e-commerce channels.
