Redesign Health Research
Investment Thesis
Redesign Health is a global venture and applied technology platform, not a traditional check-writing VC fund. Founded in 2018 by CEO Brett Shaheen, the firm operates as a healthcare venture studio: it co-founds, staffs, and capitalizes new healthcare companies from scratch, then backs them with capital and operating support through exit. The firm's stated thesis is that healthcare is "a multi-agent arena defined by rules, incentives, and capital flows that implicitly encode the human limits of information and coordination," and that AI removes many of those historical limits. Leadership has said explicitly that "AI will do more good for humanity in healthcare than anywhere else."
Redesign backs founders "at the earliest stage, oftentimes before their ideas are fully formed," then applies an internal AI operating system (branded Atlas) built on roughly a million hours of internal healthcare research and a network of about 100,000 people and institutions to match founders, ideas, healthcare partners, and capital.
Sector Focus
Exclusively healthcare and health-adjacent AI. The firm organizes its work around eight investing themes:
- Addressing the healthcare labor shortage
- Accelerating value-based and longitudinal care
- Advancing healthcare interoperability
- Preparing for an aging population
- Eliminating barriers to health equity
- Expanding sites of care
- Growing the insured population
- Driving healthcare personalization and consumerization
Recent portfolio activity clusters heavily around AI-native care navigation, post-acute/care-transitions intelligence, aging and dementia care, and healthcare financial and payer operations.
Stage Focus
Redesign is structurally a company builder, so its "stage focus" is earliest-stage: pre-seed and seed, frequently as the founding investor of record before a company has a name. It also runs venture buyout strategies for existing healthcare businesses, and increasingly co-invests alongside later-stage investors (e.g., GV and NEA in Translucent's $27M Series A) as portfolio companies scale.
Check Size
Observed initial checks are small and studio-style:
- $2.75M seed to lead Gravity Rail's launch (April 2026)
- $2.5M strategic pre-seed into Nuxera AI via its Sanabil Venture Studio joint venture (October 2025)
- $8.6M seed round (co-led, not solo) into Cascala Health (August 2025)
Leadership has said the firm deliberately caps volume at roughly four to five new investments per market per year to preserve depth of support per founder, despite seeing more opportunity than that.
Lead Tendency
Leads. As a venture studio, Redesign is typically the founding/lead investor at company inception (Gravity Rail, Nuxera AI, Corvus with Mayo Clinic, Linea with DaVita). It also participates alongside other lead investors once companies raise from outside capital at later stages.
Recent Activity
Fund status: actively deploying. In December 2024, Redesign raised $175M specifically to launch roughly 20 additional companies focused on healthy aging, expanding sites of service, and interoperability. Since then:
- April 2026: Led $2.75M seed to launch Gravity Rail (AI patient engagement/communication)
- May 2026: Anomaly (AI-powered payer intelligence, formerly medical billing-focused), an existing Redesign portfolio company, raised $17M led by Sound Ventures
- March 2026: Translucent (AI financial analyst for healthcare operators) raised a $27M Series A led by GV and NEA
- October/November 2025: Backed Corvus, a Mayo Clinic-partnered surgical referral/triage startup
- October 2025: DUOS, a Redesign portfolio company for senior care coordination, raised $130M to expand AI and payer partnerships
- October 2025: Nuxera AI raised a $2.5M pre-seed from Sanabil Venture Studio by Redesign Health
- August 2025: Cascala Health raised $8.6M seed for AI-powered post-acute care intelligence
- August 2025: Linea (AI-driven congestive heart failure platform) launched with backing from Redesign Health and DaVita

Decision Process
Not fully disclosed publicly, but the firm operates as an integrated venture-building partnership with functional leads (technology, new ventures, platform, strategy/finance, global development) feeding a centralized, AI-assisted evaluation process (Atlas) before the leadership team commits to launching or backing a company. The firm describes an "extremely high bar," capping itself to roughly four to five new company launches per market per year even when more opportunities are available.
Founder Preferences
Redesign looks for exceptional founders willing to be matched into a company concept the studio has already researched and validated, "oftentimes before their ideas are fully formed." It has built an internal founder-intelligence system using organizational psychologists to study the traits of successful healthcare entrepreneurs, and prioritizes founders who can execute inside a structured, institution-partnered build process rather than purely founder-originated ideas.
Geographic Focus
Headquartered in New York City, with a Los Angeles office. International expansion is a current strategic priority: Redesign launched the Sanabil Venture Studio by Redesign Health in Saudi Arabia (partnership with Sanabil Investments, a PIF-owned entity, targeting at least 20 healthcare companies) and a Global Ventures Headquarters in Bengaluru, India. Leadership has stated ambitions to expand next into Europe, Southeast Asia, and additional Indian markets.
