Robinhood Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Robinhood Ventures is the SEC-registered investment adviser (operating as Robinhood Ventures DE, LLC) and wholly owned subsidiary of Robinhood Markets, Inc. that manages a family of publicly-traded closed-end funds giving retail investors direct exposure to late-stage private companies. The thesis is explicitly about democratizing access rather than sourcing and backing founders: Robinhood observes that the number of US public companies has fallen from roughly 7,000 in 2000 to about 4,000 in 2024, while private company value has surpassed $10 trillion, and that this "frontier" of value creation has historically been closed to everyday investors. Robinhood Ventures' funds buy equity in what it calls "Frontier Companies" — best-in-class, category-leading private businesses operating at the cutting edge of their industries — and hold them as permanent, long-duration positions through IPO and beyond.
Sector Focus
The live fund's holdings span AI/foundation models, fintech infrastructure, aerospace/defense, cybersecurity, enterprise SaaS, HR tech, logistics, consumer/social, gaming, and digital health. There is no narrow sector mandate; selection is driven by company-level "frontier" status (scale, growth, category leadership) rather than a specific vertical thesis. AI and fintech currently dominate NAV concentration.
Stage Focus
Robinhood Ventures Fund I (RVI) invests almost exclusively in late-stage, pre-IPO private companies — many past Series D, at unicorn-plus valuations, and in some cases former or current portfolio companies that have since gone public (Klarna, Chime). A second vehicle, Robinhood Ventures Fund II (RVII), is in SEC registration with an IPO roadshow opening to retail investors on August 3, 2026; RVII is explicitly positioned to reach earlier in the stack, targeting "early- and growth-stage private companies," with particular emphasis on current/former Y Combinator companies and YC-founder-led startups. Robinhood Ventures is therefore expanding from a pure late-stage/pre-IPO strategy (Fund I) toward an early- and growth-stage strategy (Fund II).
Check Size
Disclosed individual position sizes for RVI have ranged from roughly $14.6M (a March 2026 secondary purchase of Stripe Class B common stock) to $75M (an April 2026 primary purchase of OpenAI common stock, described by the fund's president as "one of RVI's largest investments to date"). A March 2026 primary purchase of ElevenLabs Series D preferred stock was sized at roughly $20M. These are allocations into a public, permanent-capital vehicle rather than negotiated VC checks, so sizing is a function of available NAV and position-sizing discipline rather than round dynamics.
Lead Tendency
Robinhood Ventures does not lead priced venture rounds in the traditional sense. It gains exposure through direct participation in primary funding rounds, secondary share purchases from existing holders, and indirect exposure via special purpose vehicles (SPVs). It behaves as an allocator into rounds led by traditional growth and venture investors, not as a deal originator or lead investor.
Recent Activity
RVI priced its IPO on March 6, 2026 at $25.00/share, raising roughly $658.4M, and finished its first fiscal year (ended March 31, 2026) with $655.3M in net assets and a NAV of $24.05/share — with only 48.3% of NAV deployed into nine direct private positions and the balance held in money market funds, indicating substantial dry powder still being deployed. Recent disclosed transactions include the March 2026 Stripe and ElevenLabs purchases and the April 2026 OpenAI investment. Robinhood Ventures is simultaneously standing up Fund II (RVII), with its IPO roadshow opening to all investors (not just institutions) via the Robinhood app and YouTube starting August 3, 2026 — continuing the firm's core positioning of extending institutional-style access to retail.
Portfolio Highlights
RVI's top disclosed positions by NAV weight are OpenAI (~14%), SpaceX (~11%), Anthropic (~8%), Stripe (~7%), and Databricks (~6%), with the top ten holdings representing roughly 70% of invested NAV. The broader disclosed portfolio (20+ companies) includes Ramp, Canva, Discord, Plaid, Scale AI, Rippling, Notion, Figma, Wiz, Anduril, Flexport, Airtable, Gusto, Brex, Airwallex, Boom Supersonic, ElevenLabs, Mercor, Oura, Revolut, Epic Games, Klarna, and Chime. No exits have been disclosed yet given the fund's short operating history (launched publicly in March 2026).

Decision Process
Not disclosed in public materials. As a registered investment adviser managing publicly-traded funds, position decisions are made by the Robinhood Ventures investment team under SEC-regulated fund governance rather than a traditional VC partnership vote or solo-GP model; the firm does not describe a founder-facing diligence or decision-timeline process because it typically buys into rounds and secondaries rather than originating new financings.
Founder Preferences
Not applicable in the traditional sense. Robinhood Ventures does not run a founder-facing sourcing or diligence process; it selects already-scaled, category-leading private companies for inclusion in a retail-accessible public vehicle, and company access requests are directed generically to [email protected] rather than routed through a partner-level relationship process.
Geographic Focus
Managed out of Robinhood Markets' Menlo Park, CA headquarters. The portfolio itself is not US-only: while most holdings (OpenAI, SpaceX, Anthropic, Stripe, Databricks, Ramp, Discord, Plaid, Scale AI, Rippling, Notion, Figma, Wiz, Anduril, Flexport, Airtable, Gusto, Brex, Mercor, Epic Games) are US-headquartered, the fund also holds international frontier companies including Revolut (UK) and Airwallex (Australia/Hong Kong).
Fund Structure Notes
RVI and RVII are structured as listed closed-end funds (CEFs), not traditional LP-structured venture funds. They charge a 2% annual management fee on net assets with no carried interest, have no shareholder redemption rights (shares trade on NYSE instead), and — unlike institutional VC funds — have no investor accreditation, minimum investment, or net-worth requirements, since shares are purchasable by any retail investor through the public markets.
