Runa Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Runa Capital is a global venture capital firm built by serial entrepreneurs. It backs early-stage software and deep tech startups, with a stated focus on deep tech, enterprise software and fintech infrastructure. Its current fund (Fund IV) targets seed and early-stage startups building B2B software and deep tech products across AI/ML, open source, future of computing and fintech infrastructure. The firm describes its mission as empowering scrappy entrepreneurs building large-scale tech-enabled businesses, as hands-on investors and long-term partners.
Stage Focus
Runa's site lists Pre-Seed, Seed and Series A as its investment stages. Earlier funds leaned toward Series A with occasional post-seed and Series B rounds (Crunchbase, 2020). The current profile is earlier, with the first check landing at seed.
Check Size
The site states a first check per company of $0.5M to $5M. A 2020 Crunchbase report on Fund III cited investments of $1M to $10M, which reflects the older, later-stage mandate.
Lead Tendency
The site does not say whether Runa leads. Portfolio pages show Runa investing alongside specialist leads, for example Quantonation leading Pasqal's seed and Series A. Lead tendency is recorded as unknown.
Recent Activity
Fund IV closed on 9 October 2024 at $116M, after an initial close in 2022. Runa says it has raised over $550M in total (the site now shows $600M+ AUM) and has invested in more than 100 companies across 14 countries. Fund IV investments named in the announcement include Bunny (CDN), Sydecar, Akhetonics and Welinq. The most recent investments listed on the homepage are Twenty (open-source CRM, Nov 2024), Keep (open-source AIOps, Aug 2024) and Revi (customer engagement software, Jul 2024). Runa also publishes the quarterly ROSS Index of top-trending open-source startups, most recently Q3 2026 on 13 October 2026.
