Saama Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Saama Capital is a Mumbai/San Francisco-oriented, India-focused early-stage venture capital firm whose stated mission is "Creativity. Connection. Capital." The firm backs "passionate founders building disruptive companies" and emphasizes a solution-driven, decisive, and fast partnership style. Saama positions itself as a long-term partner to entrepreneurs rather than a purely transactional check-writer, drawing on the 20+ years of combined sector experience across its partner bench. The firm was built out of Saama Capital's earlier fund history (evolving from prior India-crossover vintage funds) under founder and Managing Partner Ash Lilani, who previously built and led SVB Global's international expansion (China, India, Israel, UK) for Silicon Valley Bank.
Sector Focus
Saama invests across four core areas: consumer technology, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands, enterprise/B2B software, and financial services. The current 60+ company portfolio skews heavily toward Indian D2C consumer brands (personal care, apparel, food & beverage, jewelry) alongside a meaningful cluster of fintech/financial-services companies and a growing set of B2B SaaS and applied-AI bets (e.g., Zeni, Scalenut, DaVinci Commerce, Poetics). There is also a smaller cohort in agri-tech/robotics (AutoNxt Automation, Praman), health & wellness (GenePath Diagnostics, MyMuse, Wellthy), and education (Sunstone, TutorVista, Digiaccel).
Stage Focus
Saama focuses on Seed and Pre-Series A stage investing, positioning itself as an early institutional check for Indian founders, with selective follow-on participation in Series A/B/C rounds of existing portfolio companies (e.g., Mokobara Series B, Supertails Series C).
Check Size
Typical entry cheques range from $500K to $4M, consistent with a Seed/Pre-Series A specialist writing meaningful but non-controlling checks, then reserving capital for follow-ons in winners.
Lead Tendency
Saama both leads and follows. Recent examples of leading or co-leading include Gully Labs' Series A (INR 30 Cr), AutoNxt Automation's $3M pre-Series A, Sunstone's INR 24 Cr round, Oddr's $2M round (co-led with Twin Ventures), and Laani's INR 9.1 Cr pre-seed (co-led with V3 Ventures). It also regularly participates in existing-portfolio follow-ons led by other funds, such as Mokobara's Series B (led by Peak XV Partners) and Supertails' $30M Series C (led by Venturi Partners).
Recent Activity
The firm remains actively deploying in 2026: it backed DaVinci Commerce's (formerly Jivox) strategic financing round in January 2026, with founder Ash Lilani joining the company's board; participated in Supertails' $30M Series C in February 2026; and co-led Laani's pre-seed round in March 2026. In 2025, Saama saw a notable partial exit when portfolio company BlueStone Jewellery completed its IPO, with Saama selling shares at roughly 10.6x its original 2012 Series A cost basis. Fisdom, another portfolio company, was acquired by Groww in a deal that completed in October 2025 after SEBI approval, giving Saama an M&A exit alongside the IPO exit.
Portfolio Highlights
Saama's portfolio spans 60+ companies. Landmark names include One97 Communications/Paytm (fintech, IPO), BlueStone (jewelry e-commerce, IPO 2025, ~10.6x return), Snapdeal (e-commerce), Shaadi.com/People Interactive (consumer internet), Sula Vineyards (wine, IPO), Chai Point, Veeba, and Games2Win. D2C standouts include SuperBottoms, DaMensch, The Moms Co., Mokobara, Typsy Beauty, and Koparo. Exits beyond BlueStone and Fisdom include Fingo (acquired by Coinbase), Mezi (acquired by American Express), and Prizm Payment Services (acquired by Hitachi).
Team
Saama is led by founder and Managing Partner Ash Lilani, supported by a bench of operating partners with deep India consumer, tech, and finance backgrounds (former General Counsel at Saama, ex-Infosys/Enquero operator, and veteran India VC/PE/banking professionals), plus a finance and operations team handling fund administration.
Decision Process
The firm operates as a partnership with a Managing Partner and multiple advisory/operating partners weighing in on deals, rather than a single solo-GP structure.
Founder Preferences
Saama looks for passionate, decisive founders building disruptive, category-defining businesses across consumer, D2C, enterprise, and fintech in India, and it values long-term, high-trust relationships with the entrepreneurs it backs.
Geographic Focus
Saama is squarely India-focused, investing in Indian-headquartered founders and companies, with a global network (US-based Managing Partner, international LP base, and India-US corridor relationships) supporting portfolio companies' international ambitions.
