Speciale Invest Research
Investment Thesis
Speciale Invest is a Chennai-based, pure-play DeepTech venture capital firm founded in 2017 by Vishesh Rajaram and Arjun Rao. The firm backs bold, early-stage founders building disruptive innovations deeply rooted in science, engineering, and technology — ideas with the power to redefine entire industries. It organizes its focus around five pillars: Novel Energy & Planetary Health, Human Longevity & Synthetic Biology, Beyond Earth & Space Tech, Advanced Manufacturing, and AI Led Software. The firm explicitly prioritizes exponential over incremental change and positions itself as a patient, people-first institutional investor that is often the first check into a company. With Fund III (closed August 2025), Speciale is leaning further into sovereign-tech and globally scalable IP from India, citing India's geopolitical position and the need to reduce dependence on foreign technology as a driving rationale.
Stage Focus
Speciale invests almost exclusively at pre-seed and seed. The firm states plainly that it does not do Series A follow-ons as a new entry point ("we are a seed stage VC only") — its later checks into existing portfolio companies are follow-on reserves, not new-logo Series A bets. It is typically the first institutional investor in a company, sometimes following small pre-institutional rounds (<$200K) from accelerators or friends and family.
Check Size
Fund III writes initial tickets of roughly ₹7–10 crore (~$800K–$1.14M), with flexibility to go higher in select cases. Historically the firm's stated sweet spot is ~$1M. Roughly 50–60% of total fund corpus is reserved for follow-on investments, and Fund III targets increased ownership (~15%, up from ~10% in Fund II and ~5% in Fund I).
Lead Tendency
Speciale usually leads or co-leads the first institutional round into a company (e.g., co-leading InspeCity's ₹100 crore Pre-Series A in August 2026), though it has also collaborated with co-investors.
Recent Activity
Fund III closed oversubscribed at ₹600 crore (~$69M) against a ₹500 crore target in August 2025, with more than half from repeat LPs. The fund targets 18–20 early-stage deeptech startups across AI infrastructure, spacetech, climatetech, quantum systems, advanced manufacturing, and dual-use defense through 2029. Recent investments include Nucleovir Therapeutics (oncolytic virus therapy, June 2026), H2LooP (physical AI infrastructure, April 2026), a follow-on into Peptris (AI drug discovery, February 2026), a follow-on into e-TRNL Energy (battery architecture, February 2026), DashamLabs (silica aerogel manufacturing, October 2025), Morphing Machines (reconfigurable chip, Series A follow-on, October 2025), Unmannd (aerial autonomy/defense drones, September 2025), and VyomIC (sovereign PNT/navigation, September 2025).
Portfolio Highlights
Notable portfolio companies include Agnikul Cosmos (3D-printed rocket engines, first check in 2018), GalaxEye (SAR satellite imaging), ePlane Company (air taxis), Ultraviolette Automotive (electric motorcycles, now exporting to 10 European nations), CynLr (industrial machine-vision robotics), QNu Labs (quantum-safe cryptography), Mindgrove Technologies (indigenous semiconductor design), Newtrace (green hydrogen electrolyzers), Metastable Materials (battery-waste metal recovery), InspeCity (in-space servicing stack), Anubal Fusion (fusion energy), Sthyr Energy (long-duration energy storage), and eka.care (digital health platform). The firm reports nine M&A exits to date and describes itself, via its own impact stats, as having deployed $140M+ across 45+ companies over 9+ years.

Decision Process
Speciale runs a five-stage process: initial materials review, a first meeting, a follow-up with at least one partner, a full partner meeting followed by an internal investment committee (IC) discussion, and a final meeting where founders present to the entire team. The firm says it aims to give an answer at each stage within roughly 48 hours and positions its overall process as "quick and transparent."
Founder Preferences
Speciale explicitly welcomes very early teams — "as small as 2-3 people with an idea" — and is often the first investor a startup has ever had. It looks for science- and engineering-first founders tackling large, meaningful technical problems rather than incremental improvements, and is comfortable investing pre-product, pre-pitch-deck. It is skeptical of founders who have already raised $1–2M+ before approaching them, viewing that as a poor stage fit.
Geographic Focus
Speciale is India-focused with global ambition — it backs India-headquartered, engineering-first teams building technology intended to compete and sell globally ("sovereign tech and globally scalable IP from India"). The firm is headquartered in Chennai (The Grid, Central Ave, Kesavaperumalpuram) with an additional office in Bengaluru (WeWork Galaxy, Ashok Nagar).
