IIMA Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
IIMA Ventures (formerly IIMA-CIIE, the Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship at IIM Ahmedabad) describes itself as "the innovation continuum," backing fearless founders building disruptive solutions at the earliest, highest-risk stages when institutional support is scarce. Originally built inside IIM Ahmedabad in 2002 and incorporated as a Section 8 company in 2007-08, it was recognized by India's Department of Science and Technology as a Centre of Excellence in 2019 and rebranded from IIMA-CIIE to IIMA Ventures in 2024. The organization blends incubation, acceleration, research/insights, and direct seed investing into one platform, with a founder-market-fit lens at pre-seed and an added product-visibility lens at seed.
Sector Focus
Three thematic pillars anchor the portfolio:
- DeepTech: aerospace, space, robotics, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, defense-adjacent hardware (e.g. Agnikul, Nabhdrishti Aerospace, Bellatrix Aerospace, Morphing Machines, Unbox Robotics)
- Digitalization: fintech, embedded finance, and digital-inclusion infrastructure for India's underserved markets (e.g. Setu, Kaleidofin, Tarrakki, Razorpay)
- ClimateTech: climate and clean-energy solutions (e.g. Cell Propulsion, Tan90 Thermal, Clean Electric)
Adjacent programs also touch healthtech (Curelo, Butterfly Learnings, 5C Network), edtech (GUVI, Geekster), and agribusiness/livelihood-focused ventures through separate cohort programs.
Stage Focus
IIMA Ventures invests earliest of anyone in a company's life: pre-seed grants/equity for frontier-tech founders (aerospace, biotech, cleantech, life sciences), and seed-stage capital to bridge the "valley of death" before larger institutional rounds. It has recently doubled pre-seed cheque sizes up to $500K for select deep-tech founders.
Check Size
Typical seed investment is $100K-$150K per venture, with capacity to syndicate additional capital alongside marquee co-investors such as Sequoia, Accel, Matrix Partners, and Qualcomm Ventures. Pre-seed deep-tech cheques can now run up to $500K.
Lead Tendency
Mixed: IIMA Ventures frequently leads pre-seed rounds for first-time deep-tech founders (e.g. Nabhdrishti Aerospace's INR 3 Cr pre-seed round in April 2024), then participates alongside larger funds as companies graduate to Series A and beyond (e.g. Accel-led $3M round in Nabhdrishti Aerospace, March 2025).
Recent Activity
The platform remains highly active through 2026: it launched an Aerospace & Defence Acceleration Fund with Jaivel Aerospace (October 2025, up to $400K per startup), signed a Rs 40 crore deep-tech co-investment partnership with SIDBI to back 30 startups (April 2025), launched an AI Residency Program, and expanded into Dubai in 2026 to connect its DeepTech, ClimateTech, and Digitalization portfolio with UAE investors and corporates. Portfolio company Butterfly Learnings raised a Rs 65 crore Pre-Series B led by Inflexor Ventures in August 2026, with IIMA Ventures continuing to participate as an existing investor.
Portfolio Highlights
340+ startups funded over more than 15 years, spanning 68+ tracked companies across public deal databases, with 35+ profitable exits at the seed stage and $250M+ in follow-on capital raised by portfolio companies from downstream investors. Notable names include Razorpay (fintech), Agnikul Cosmos (3D-printed rocket engines), IdeaForge (unmanned aircraft systems, publicly listed), GUVI (vernacular tech education, acquired by HCL), Tookitaki (AML/anti-financial-crime platform), and Fourth Partner Energy (renewable energy).

Decision Process
Investment decisions run through a structured seed & acceleration team under partner and SVP oversight, with a board that includes IIM Ahmedabad academic leadership and outside industry figures - closer to an investment-committee model than a solo-GP or pure-partnership structure, reflecting its origin as an academic Centre of Excellence rather than a traditional fund.
Founder Preferences
First-time and repeat deep-tech, fintech, and climate founders building IP-driven, India-for-the-world ventures; strong emphasis on founder-market fit at the earliest stage and demonstrated product visibility by seed. Many founders come through IIMA Ventures' own accelerator cohorts (iAccelerator, People & Culture Accelerator, Indore Smart City program) before receiving capital.
Geographic Focus
Primarily India, anchored by physical centres in Ahmedabad (50,000 sq ft on the IIM campus), Jaipur (15,000 sq ft), and Indore, with a 2026 Dubai expansion to build cross-border ties with UAE investors and corporates for its India-based portfolio.
