TransLink Capital Research
Investment Thesis
TransLink Capital positions itself as a bridge between US and global technology startups and Asia's largest corporations and markets. Founded in 2006 in Silicon Valley by a group of partners with roots in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, the firm's core thesis is that startups grow faster and more durably when paired early with strategic corporate partners who can become customers, channel partners, suppliers, or eventual acquirers. TransLink maintains relationships with more than 40 leading Asian multinationals and structures much of its process around validating startup-corporate fit before investing: the firm reports "100% validated intent with strategic partners pre-investment," with 81% of those introductions leading to a post-investment business relationship and 65% resulting in a co-investment partnership from the corporate partner. This corporate-bridge model is the firm's defining differentiator versus generalist Silicon Valley VCs.
Stage Focus
TransLink invests from seed through Series B, with the heaviest concentration at Series A. The portfolio also shows continued participation in select Series C rounds for existing portfolio companies (e.g., BeZero Carbon, Eclypsium) and occasional seed-stage bets on AI-native startups (HegelAI, Jobright, Solve Intelligence, Shadeform, Asklio).
Check Size
Third-party data (aggregated, not firm-disclosed) puts typical checks between roughly $500K and $7M, consistent with a firm doing both seed and Series A/B rounds across a large number of companies per year.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. TransLink both leads and co-leads (e.g., co-led Thintronics' $23M Series A with Maverick Capital in April 2024) and participates as a syndicate/affiliate investor in larger rounds led by others (many portfolio entries are marked "Affiliate" investments in Series B/C rounds). Given this pattern, lead tendency is best classified as "both."
Recent Activity
TransLink's own news page shows continued activity through early 2026: Sakana AI (a portfolio company) was profiled by Nikkei as Japan's most valuable AI unicorn in January 2026; TensorWave raised a $100M round for AMD-powered AI cloud infrastructure in May 2025; Eclypsium raised a $45M Series C for supply-chain security in January 2025; BeZero Carbon closed a $32M Series C for carbon ratings in January 2025; Thintronics closed a $23M Series A co-led by TransLink in April 2024; and Naborforce (elder-care marketplace) raised $9M in December 2022. Public trackers estimate roughly 5-9 new investments per year in recent years, consistent with an actively deploying fund.
Portfolio Highlights
TransLink has backed 175+ early-stage companies across 13 funds since 2007, spanning AI, cybersecurity, mobility/automotive, digital health, robotics/Industry 4.0, fintech/blockchain, sustainability, retail tech, big data/cloud, and interactive media/gaming. Notable exits and outcomes include: Carbonite (IPO, NASDAQ: CARB), Molekule (NASDAQ: MKUL), CloudOn (acquired by Dropbox), Cliqr (acquired by Cisco), Fetch Robotics (acquired, autonomous mobile robots), SeaLights (acquired by Tricentis), Kamcord (acquired by Lyft), Misfit (acquired by Fossil), Sandforce (acquired by LSI), and SomnoWare (acquired by ResMed). Active highlights include Sakana AI (foundation models, Japan's most valuable startup), Noom (consumer wellness), Rescale (HPC cloud simulation), Market Kurly/Kurly (Korean grocery delivery), and a deep bench of automotive/robotics companies (QCraft, Sonatus, Calterah, Plus One Robotics, Fox Robotics, Everest Labs).
Team
TransLink is a large, multi-office partnership rather than a solo-GP or small-team shop. Co-founders and Managing Directors: Toshi Otani (Silicon Valley), Sung Park (Seoul), Jackie Yang (Taipei). Additional Managing Directors: Eric Hsia and Gwong-Yih Lee (Silicon Valley). Partners: Manabu Ando and Tomohiro Uchida (Tokyo), Sophia Jin, Kaz Kikuchi, and Brendan Walsh (Silicon Valley), Joonsuk Lee (Seoul), Frey Yang (Beijing). Senior Principals Kelvin Mu and Masa Yamato, and Principals Tiffany Huang and May Takahashi, round out the Silicon Valley investment team, supported by senior associates and associates in Beijing, Silicon Valley, and Taipei. The firm also carries a bench of venture partners and senior advisors (Steve Carlin, Darren Huang, Luis Llovera, Yuji Ichimura, Jack Sheng, Tyler Tanaka, Jonas Kjellstrand, Peter Wallace) who support sourcing and corporate-partner introductions.
Decision Process
Given the size of the partnership and the multi-office structure spanning Silicon Valley, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, and Taipei, TransLink operates as a partnership decision process rather than a solo GP or a single investment committee gate, with regional partners sourcing and championing deals in their geography.
Founder Preferences
TransLink favors technical founders building in categories where a corporate partnership can materially accelerate go-to-market: AI/ML, cybersecurity, mobility/automotive, robotics, digital health, and fintech/blockchain. The firm's edge is most valuable to founders who want (and can use) warm introductions into large Asian corporates as customers or strategic investors.
Geographic Focus
Global with a strong Asia-bridge orientation: North America (concentrated in Silicon Valley), Western Europe, and East/Southeast Asia (Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Malaysia). Offices in Palo Alto (HQ), Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Taipei, and Kuala Lumpur.
