TDV Partners Research
Investment Thesis
TDV Partners is a Bengaluru-based micro venture capital firm founded in 2021 by Ujwal Sutaria, a two-time founder who previously managed growth-stage credit relationships at InnoVen Capital (working with Swiggy, BlackBuck, Licious, and DealShare). The firm's name stands for "Trillion Dollar Venture Partners," reflecting its stated belief that companies built out of India can eventually operate at the scale of Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Amazon. TDV writes the first institutional cheque, often before product-market fit and sometimes before a product exists at all. Sutaria has framed the firm's philosophy around speed and founder malleability rather than technology or capital moats: "How fast you iterate is the only moat."
Sector Focus
TDV organizes its thesis around three buckets: consumer tech (everyday consumer needs solved with technology), consumer upgrade (products and services for India's rising aspirational middle class), and consumer AI (AI products that make people meaningfully more productive). Within that frame the firm has also called out spiritual tech / devotion tech (faithtech), fintech, and gaming as emerging categories it believes are at an inflection point in India. The portfolio spans D2C brands, marketplaces, HR/gig platforms, fintech and lending apps, and AI-enabled tools, with roughly 80% of capital deployed against the three core consumer themes and 20% kept opportunistic for standout founders outside them.
Stage Focus
TDV invests almost exclusively at pre-seed, and occasionally seed, typically as the first institutional investor on the cap table. Deals can close in under 24 hours from first pitch to signed term sheet given the firm's single-GP structure.
Check Size
Cheque sizes are published as USD 50K-500K on the firm's site; in a January 2026 interview Sutaria described typically leading rounds in the $500K-$1M range, sometimes pre-product or pre-revenue. Fund II deploys in INR 1-2 crore increments per company.
Lead Tendency
TDV usually leads or co-leads the rounds it enters, and frequently syndicates with other early-stage funds and angels since most Indian pre-seed rounds are stitched together by a small group of investors operating in parallel.
Recent Activity
TDV's first fund (~$3M / INR 25 crore) backed roughly 30 companies and is trending around 80% MOIC with one exit inside two years of investing. Fund II, a Rs 50 crore (~$5.8M) vehicle announced in October 2024, targets 20-25 investments over roughly two years and had backed seven to eight companies as of a January 2026 interview, with a target of ten investments by the end of FY26 and 10-12 per year in FY27. TDV has also backed the pre-seed round of açaí-focused QSR chain Acai Theory alongside All In Capital. Several TDV-backed companies have gone on to raise from Peak XV Partners, Accel, and Fireside Ventures.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable names include Aftershoot (AI photography software), Stan/getstan.app (India-facing social app for creators and gamers), Flexprice (usage-based billing for agentic AI companies), Spintly (smart access control), HireQuotient (AI-powered hiring), Healofy (social commerce for new and expecting mothers), Awign (gig-work platform), Kindlife (K-beauty marketplace), and TradeX (prediction markets, cited by the firm as an early bet later covered in the press). The portfolio has grown past 40 companies, with about 24 having raised follow-on rounds and several crossing INR 100 crore in revenue; Zepto and Seekho are cited by the firm as prominent misses.
Team
- Ujwal Sutaria, Founder & General Partner — Two-time founder (Athletto, a sports-booking marketplace; FruitOn, a cold-pressed juice delivery service) turned investor. Spent time at InnoVen Capital managing venture-debt relationships with Swiggy, BlackBuck, Eruditus, Licious, and DealShare through their growth into unicorns. MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, B.Tech from NIT Nagpur.
- Kunal Juneja, Investor — Works alongside Sutaria on sourcing, diligence, and TDV's internal AI tooling (MOX), the firm's AI-assisted pitch-intake and analysis system.
Decision Process
TDV runs a single-GP structure: investment decisions sit with Sutaria alone, explicitly to avoid the layered approval cycles of larger institutional funds and to move at founder speed.
Founder Preferences
Sutaria emphasizes founder malleability over a fixed product vision: founders who rapidly update assumptions and ship in months rather than holding out for a "finished" product shape. He backs founders pre-traction and sometimes while they are still employed elsewhere and only exploring an idea.
Geographic Focus
India-focused, backing founders "building from India for the world," headquartered in Bengaluru. Fund II has drawn LP commitments from India, the US, the UK, the UAE, and Singapore.
