Tin Alley Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Tin Alley Ventures (TAV) is a venture fund built to commercialise research from the University of Melbourne and its affiliated institutes. The firm's stated belief is that dedicating capital to research commercialisation is the key to bringing transformational ideas into the world. It describes its pitch as "exponential endeavours made in Melbourne, for the world", at the cutting edge of science, backing visionary entrepreneurs with scientific breakthroughs for people, the planet and beyond.
The primary focus is spinouts built on university research IP. TAV can also invest in existing companies where the University of Melbourne link is strong. It engages academics very early, sometimes at the ideation stage, and uses a Founder-in-Residence team to turn research ideas into investable companies.
Sector Focus
TAV invests across all sectors but names life sciences and physical sciences as its primary disciplines. The about page frames the focus areas as life sciences, deep tech and climate tech. The portfolio filters group companies as Life Sciences, Hardware and Software.
- Life sciences: oncology, protein degraders, obesity and diabetes, botanical therapeutics, neurotechnology, cell engineering
- Physical sciences: quantum computing, water-capture materials
- Software and AI: process mining, engineering-documentation automation, AI digital twins, novel LLM architecture
Stage Focus
The firm invests from seed to pre-IPO and has capacity for follow-on investment in later rounds. Its sister Genesis Pre-Seed Fund, launched in 2022 alongside TAV, is the University's pre-seed vehicle.
Check Size
TAV states it can invest from A$500,000 to A$5m+ per company. Converted at roughly 0.66, that is about US$330K to US$3.3M. The stored AUM and check size values are USD conversions of the AUD figures.
Lead Tendency
The about page says "We lead rounds". In later rounds the portfolio shows TAV joining syndicates, for example alongside Bessemer Venture Partners and Tribeca Venture Partners (per TAV's LinkedIn), and in Twin1 AI's 2026 US$20M seed where Aramco Ventures co-led. Lead tendency is recorded as both.
Recent Activity
- August 2026: backed Twin1 AI's US$20M seed round (governance-first AI digital twins for knowledge workers); Aramco Ventures co-led per press coverage.
- October 2025: portfolio company Apromore signed to be acquired by Salesforce (completed 3 November 2025).
- The portfolio page lists new additions Kronus, Silicon Quantum Computing and i14, with logos uploaded in 2026.
- The firm reports 14 investments and 100+ global experts and syndicate investors engaged. The FAQ states 9 investments from 200+ University spinouts reviewed (an older figure).
Fund Status
TAV was founded in 2022 as a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and Tanarra Capital. It manages A$125m, described as the first fund of its kind in Australia. Investors include the University of Melbourne, distinguished alumni, family offices, institutional investors and Breakthrough Victoria. Activity through August 2026 indicates the fund is actively deploying.

Decision Process
Investment decisions run through a dedicated investment team and a standing Investment Committee, so the process is committee-based. The firm says founders do not need a pitch deck, business plan or team to start a conversation. It does not provide grants and will not fund research before spinout; it takes equity.
Founder Preferences
TAV backs researchers, students and alumni of the University of Melbourne and its affiliated institutes (Florey, WEHI, Doherty, Peter MacCallum, Murdoch Children's and others) who are building globally competitive, high-impact companies. Cold outreach works through the contact form; a University connection is effectively required.
Geographic Focus
Melbourne and the wider Victorian research ecosystem, with a global go-to-market ambition. The office is at Melbourne Connect, 700 Swanston St, Carlton VIC. It is not a fit for companies without a University of Melbourne link.
