Unicorn India Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Unicorn India Ventures (UIV) is a Mumbai-based venture firm that now describes itself as patient capital for deeptech founders. It backs early-stage companies where software, science, or novel hardware are the unlock. The firm screens on four lenses and wants a company to pass three of four before it goes to investment committee: tech-driven (the technology is the moat, not a wrapper on an old business), nascency (it comes in at the first institutional round, when conviction matters more than traction), novelty (real problems solved in a way that could not be done before), and capital efficiency (unit economics that compound, not capital to buy growth).
UIV argues India's deeptech infrastructure has arrived: semiconductor policy, private space, defence reform, and academic founders coming out of labs. It says most domestic VCs were not built for long deeptech cycles and non-linear revenue, so founders raise a fraction of what comparable US founders do.
Stage Focus
Seed to Series A, entering at the first institutional round. The portfolio page lists stages invested such as Pre-Seed (OrbitAID), Seed (Exsure, Bioscan Research, StampMyVisa, Vodex, Verdant Impact, Venttup, TakeMe2Space), Pre-Series A (Deep Algorithms, Zealthix) and Series A (Vervesemi). Fund I did seed and pre-Series A deals.
Check Size
The firm does not publish a typical check for its main funds. Press on the IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I says that fund targets cheques of Rs 15-25 crore across about 25 startups. Earlier funds are smaller: Fund I was Rs 100 crore across 17 investments, Fund II Rs 300 crore across 20, and Fund III Rs 1,200 crore across 24 investments. Check size fields are left empty because no firm-wide range is stated.
Lead Tendency
Press describes UIV as leading seed rounds, for example the $1M seed in Bioscan Research (July 2026). Lead tendency is set to leads with moderate confidence.
Recent Activity
- Fund III (Rs 1,200 crore, seed to Series A) is described on the site as fully invested, with 24 investments. Recent 2026 deals include StampMyVisa, Vervesemi, Verdant Impact, and Deep Algorithms (April 2026).
- IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I, co-managed with IIT Madras Research Park, was announced in February 2026 at Rs 600 crore, reached a Rs 450 crore first close in September 2026 and deployed about Rs 55 crore across four startups. It is targeting Rs 1,000 crore by December 2026.
- Fund II (Rs 300 crore, 20 investments) is in its exit window; Fund I has exited.

Decision Process
Partnership with an investment committee gate: a company needs to pass three of four lenses first. Partners sit on no more than eight boards each, and the firm takes board seats to sharpen strategy.
Founder Preferences
Technical and academic founders with deep domain expertise, including those from labs and IITs, and founders outside the top three metros (about 65 percent of portfolio companies are outside them). Founders get operating partners, a founders network, global exposure across London, Singapore, the Gulf and the Bay, reserved follow-on capital and a Series B syndicate, and access to regulators and counsel.
Geographic Focus
India, with offices in Mumbai, London and Delaware. Portfolio spans 12 Indian states, and the firm sources from India's metro cities and tier 2 and 3 cities.
Sector Coverage
Ten sectors by design: semiconductors, space tech, defence and aerospace, robotics, health tech and life sciences, fintech and B2B SaaS, AI, climate and agritech, industry 4.0 and advanced manufacturing, and consumer. The site says no single sector dominates, though new deals lean toward deeptech.
