Seafund Research
Investment Thesis
Seafund is a Bengaluru-based venture capital firm investing in deep tech and deep science startups building defensible, IP-driven technology out of India. Their stated mission is "venture capital for mission driven teams building disruptive scalable tech," providing early-stage institutional capital plus "strategic access to insights and networks to build the next set of Frontier Tech businesses." The firm backs technical founders solving hard scientific and engineering problems rather than pure software/consumer plays, with a preference for India-domiciled companies that have global expansion potential. Investment criteria emphasize returning founders, non-obvious opportunities, and businesses building network effects, proprietary technology, and platform/protocol advantages.
Stage Focus
Seafund invests from pre-seed through pre-Series A, positioning itself as one of the first institutional checks into a company. Portfolio companies at the time of investment typically either have a built product with initial customers, or are at proof-of-concept stage with visible revenue potential. Over 50% of fund capital is reserved for follow-on rounds into winners.
Check Size
First checks typically range $300K-$750K, with follow-on capacity of up to $2M per company for standout performers. Fund II is a Rs 250 crore (~$30M) SEBI-registered Category II AIF, targeting 20-25 deep-tech investments over 2-3 years while deploying only 50-60% of capital to new investments and reserving 40-45% for follow-ons.
Lead Tendency
Seafund frequently co-leads or leads pre-seed/seed rounds alongside other early-stage India funds (Artha Venture Fund, Chiratae Ventures, Unicorn India Ventures) rather than acting as sole lead on larger rounds.
Recent Activity
Fund II (Rs 250 crore, Category II AIF, SEBI reg. IN/AIF2/22-23/1122) was announced in mid-2025 and is actively deploying, with 9+ portfolio companies as of mid-2025. Recent disclosed investments include:
- TakeMe2Space (space infrastructure) — $5M seed, January 2026, alongside Chiratae Ventures, Unicorn India Ventures, and Artha Venture Partners
- Calligo Technologies (semiconductors) — $1.1M pre-Series A, April 2025, co-led with Artha Venture Fund
- A November 2023 sustainability-focused DeepTech tranche of Rs 5 crore across RedWing, Docker Vision, Swapp, Simactricals, and Evhicle
Fund status: actively deploying under Fund II, targeting 20-25 companies through FY27.
Portfolio Highlights
Seafund's Fund I and Fund II portfolio spans roughly two dozen deep-tech companies including Calligo Technologies (semiconductor chips for HPC/AI), TakeMe2Space (space-based compute infrastructure), Pramatra Space (quantum-secure communication), C-Electric (EV powertrain), RedWing (autonomous drone logistics), Docker Vision (AI-powered port logistics), Swapp and Simactricals (EV battery-swap and wireless charging), GenRobotics (robotics), BestDoc (hospital patient experience), Fedo (health scoring for insurance underwriters), Finsall (insurance premium financing), AdvaRisk and AnaStrat (fintech/credit and trading analytics), ForeignAdmits and PupilFirst (edtech), and IsGoingOnline and Pathfndr (SaaS/AI). Notable exits include Clootrack (customer analytics), Inc42 (startup media platform), Wigzo (user engagement SaaS), and Zippee (quick-commerce logistics). The partners have also made personal/GP-level angel investments in consumer and fintech names such as TrulyMadly, Nojoto, Skillenza, and The Ayurveda Experience — some of which trace back to the founders' earlier Intel Capital India tenure (NIIT, Persistent Systems, Rediff, Sasken).

Decision Process
Structured as a small managing-partner team (two co-founders plus a general partner and principal) supported by advisors and venture partners — indicative of a partnership-style decision process rather than a solo-GP or large investment-committee model.
Founder Preferences
Seafund favors technical, often returning founders building IP-defensible deep-tech products (hardware, semiconductors, space, robotics, biotech) rather than thin software wrappers, with emphasis on teams that can demonstrate early product-market fit or a credible path from POC to revenue.
Geographic Focus
India-domiciled startups only, with active investments spread across Bengaluru, Delhi NCR/Haryana, Kerala, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Indore — no internal geographic restriction within India, and portfolio companies are expected to pursue global market expansion from an India base.
Headquarters
Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.
