Accion Venture Lab Research
Overview
Accion Venture Lab is the early-stage fintech venture strategy of Accion, a global nonprofit focused on financial inclusion. Since September 2025 it operates under the name Accion Ventures, and it is managed by Accion Impact Management, an SEC-registered investment adviser. The strategy launched in 2012. Its first fund raised about $33 million in 2019 on top of an initial $10 million pool. Fund II, Accion Venture Lab Fund II, LP, reached final close in September 2025 at $61.6 million, nearly double Fund I.
Investment Thesis
The team backs technology companies that serve financially underserved people and small businesses, with the goal of earning attractive financial returns alongside measurable social impact. The firm names embedded finance, alternative data, satellite imagery, conversational commerce and supply chain finance as themes. It looks for founders who understand local customers and markets, and it connects them with learnings from its global portfolio. It does not publish an explicit anti-thesis; the focus is inclusive fintech for MSMEs, smallholder farmers, women and low-income consumers.
Stage Focus
Accion Ventures aims to be one of the first institutional checks a company receives, so pre-seed, seed and Series A are the core stages. It keeps reserves to follow on in winners as they scale. Fund II plans up to 30 new investments.
Check Size
The firm does not publish a check size. Third-party listings cite typical initial checks around $1 million, and a Ceniarth listing shows a $1.5 million commitment to the fund in 2024. Fund size and the 30-investment target imply initial checks of roughly $0.5M to $2M, with follow-on reserves. Confidence on the range is moderate.
Lead Tendency
The firm describes hands-on support, board governance and a dedicated Portfolio Engagement team. It does not state whether it leads rounds. Lead tendency is recorded as unknown.
Recent Activity
The most recent initial investments from Fund II named in the September 2025 release are PaidHR (Nigeria), Foyer (United States), FinFra (Indonesia) and Flowcart (Kenya). Since 2012 the strategy has deployed $59.4 million across 76 companies in more than 30 countries, with 13 full or partial exits. The three most recent exits are Apollo Agriculture, Lula and Pula. The fund is actively deploying.
