AgriZeroNZ Research
Investment Thesis
AgriZeroNZ is a New Zealand public-private partnership, established in 2023, that invests in technologies to cut agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, mainly livestock methane and fertiliser-driven nitrous oxide, without hurting farm profitability or productivity. Its stated rationale is market access: global customers are setting supply-chain emissions targets that put New Zealand export revenue at risk, so the partnership wants tools in farmers' hands sooner. It backs a range of mitigation tools so farmers have affordable, effective options by 2030.
Structure and Capital
On 5 October 2026 AgriZeroNZ announced an additional NZ$117 million, on top of NZ$191 million previously committed, for NZ$308 million raised in total. The Government matches private contributions dollar for dollar. Industry investors jointly own 50 percent: The a2 Milk Company, ANZ, ANZCO, ASB, BNZ, Fonterra, Rabobank, Ravensdown, Silver Fern Farms and Synlait, with Alliance and Farmlands newly joined. Board Chair is Rob Hewett.
Stage Focus
It invests across the development pipeline, from research projects and trials through pre-seed, seed, Series A and Series B ventures. A third-party directory lists a typical NZ$1M to NZ$10M range; that figure is not stated on the firm's own site. As at 30 June 2026 it had committed NZ$80.4 million across 21 ventures, research projects and trials.
Check Size
Individual commitments seen: NZ$5.8 million in Ruminant Biotech, US$3.5 million (NZ$6.3 million) in BiomEdit, NZ$1 million each to Altraea and the Bioeconomy Science Institute through the Innovation Investment Round. Hoofprint Biome and ArkeaBio have received follow-on support. The range is project-dependent and not formally published.
Lead Tendency
Unclear. It often co-invests alongside other funders and the Ag Emissions Centre, and runs its own competitive rounds. Lead tendency is recorded as unknown.
Recent Activity

Decision Process
A small ventures team evaluates pitches submitted through the website's pitch form (elevator pitch, livestock emissions reduction potential, deck upload), with a board overseeing investments. Regulatory strategy is handled in-house, reflecting the approvals burden for on-farm products.
Founder Preferences
Technical and scientific founders with credible, testable emissions reduction technology and a plausible path to NZ regulatory approval and farmer adoption. Overseas companies are welcome if they set up for success in New Zealand, as with BiomEdit and Altraea.
Geographic Focus
New Zealand farm impact is the criterion, but it invests globally in companies and research (US, Australia, NZ) whose tools can be validated on New Zealand pasture-based livestock systems.
