CAS Star Research
Investment Thesis
CAS Star (中科创星, full name Beijing/Xi'an CAS Star Hard Technology Venture Capital) is a Chinese early-stage venture capital and incubation platform founded in 2013 by Mi Lei, Li Hao, and Cao Huitao, all of whom emerged from the Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The firm is widely credited with originating the "hard tech" (硬科技) investment category in China — technology born out of long-cycle scientific and engineering research (as opposed to consumer/internet business-model innovation), with high technical barriers to entry, clear application scenarios, and the potential to lead a new wave of industrial transformation. Founding partner Mi Lei has formalized this into an "ESK" (Economic value, Social value, Knowledge value) investment framework and has written extensively on the theme, including a forthcoming book, "The Hard Tech Wave" (硬科技浪潮). CAS Star positions itself not just as a capital provider but as a full-stack "research institution + early-stage investment + entrepreneurship platform + post-investment services" ecosystem, actively incubating spinouts directly out of CAS institutes and top universities.
Sector Focus
CAS Star organizes its portfolio around eight hard-tech verticals: optoelectronic chips (光电芯片), artificial intelligence (人工智能), aerospace (航空航天), biotechnology (生物技术), information technology (信息技术), new materials (新材料), new energy (新能源), and intelligent manufacturing (智能制造). Representative sub-themes include semiconductor materials and photonic ICs, foundation-model/LLM companies, commercial satellites and launch vehicles, autonomous driving and robotics, quantum computing, and next-generation battery/hydrogen technology.
Stage Focus
CAS Star invests earliest in the company lifecycle — frequently pre-institutional, straight out of a lab or research paper. Its "Xike Angel Fund" (西科天使基金) vehicles are explicitly angel/pre-seed focused, and the firm describes engaging as early as the "PI–IDEA–IP–IPO" continuum (principal investigator idea stage through IPO). It continues to participate in follow-on rounds (Seed through Series A/B) for portfolio companies as they scale, and in some cases (e.g., Zhipu AI) has ridden a company from a ~$5.7M seed check through to a multi-billion-dollar HKEX listing.
Check Size
No formal check-size range is published. Given the angel-fund structure and observed deal flow (Zhipu AI's founding round was ~RMB 40M / ~$5.7M; the firm approved 88 investments totaling ~$420M over 11 months in 2025, implying an average ticket near $4.8M across all stages), initial checks likely span roughly $300K at the earliest incubation stage up to $15-20M for larger follow-ons. This should be treated as a low-confidence estimate pending direct confirmation.
Lead Tendency
CAS Star typically leads or is the founding/anchor investor at the earliest stage (frequently as the platform that helped spin the company out of a CAS institute), then participates alongside larger syndicate partners in later rounds. In Zhipu AI, for example, CAS Star was an original co-founding investor in 2019 before Meituan, Tencent, and Ant Group joined in later rounds.
Recent Activity
As of November 2025, CAS Star had invested in and incubated more than 570 hard-tech companies, with cumulative managed fund size over RMB 18B (~$2.5B) across vehicles including the Xike Angel Fund (I and III), the Shaanxi Optoelectronic Integration Fund, the Beijing Hard Tech Venture Fund (multiple phases), and the CAS Star Pilot Venture Fund. In late 2025 the firm closed a record RMB 4.08B (~$573M) early-stage hard-tech RMB fund, and in the first eleven months of 2025 approved 88 new investments totaling roughly RMB 3B (~$420M). Marquee portfolio company Zhipu AI (formerly Zhipu Huazhang, now branded Z.ai) listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on January 8, 2026 as the first global large-language-model stock, and separately announced plans in mid-2026 to pursue a Shanghai STAR Market listing targeting up to RMB 15B in proceeds.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable portfolio companies span every focus sector: Zhipu AI / Z.ai (foundation models, HKEX-listed), UISee / 驭势科技 (autonomous driving), CAS Space / 中科宇航 (commercial launch vehicles), Chang Guang Satellite / 长光卫星 (Jilin-1 constellation, EO imagery), MinoSpace / 微纳星空 (satellite manufacturing), Origin Quantum / 本源量子 (quantum computing), Lightelligence / 曦智科技 (photonic computing), Tankeblue / 天科合达 (SiC semiconductor materials), Yuanjie Semiconductor / 源杰半导体 (optical chips, parent Yuanjie Technology is Shanghai STAR-listed 688498.SH), and Wayzim / 中科微至 (intelligent logistics equipment, Shanghai STAR-listed 688211.SH). Agibot / 智元机器人 (humanoid robotics) is also frequently cited among its highest-profile robotics bets, recently winning the WorldArena world-model benchmark.

Decision Process
Investment decisions run through a partnership structure led by the two founding partners (Mi Lei, Li Hao) alongside sector-focused partners, consistent with CAS Star's platform model of pairing a lead partner's technical/sector expertise with the firm's shared sourcing and incubation infrastructure.
Founder Preferences
CAS Star's programming (e.g., its "Hard Tech Champion Camp," now in its 11th cohort) and public commentary consistently emphasize deep technical founders — often PhDs, researchers, or lab-affiliated scientists — building on defensible IP with long R&D cycles, rather than business-model-first or growth-hacking founders.
Geographic Focus
CAS Star operates a tri-hub structure in Xi'an, Beijing, and Shanghai, all within mainland China, and its capital is entirely RMB-denominated. Its portfolio is overwhelmingly China-domiciled, reflecting deep integration with the CAS institute network and China's national innovation strategy (e.g., "秦创原" Shaanxi hard-tech corridor, Zhongguancun in Beijing).
