Investment Thesis
Georgian is a Toronto-based growth equity firm that has invested in market-leading B2B software companies since 2008. The firm's core thesis is that software companies leveraging data and applied AI can achieve category-defining scale, and Georgian provides not just capital but deep technical partnership through its in-house AI Lab. Founded by John Berton, Justin LaFayette, and Simon Chong, Georgian manages approximately $5.9 billion in assets under management (as of December 31, 2025) and has backed more than 80 companies since inception.
Georgian's investment philosophy is rooted in a concentrated, high-conviction approach: the firm makes approximately six new investments per year, intentionally limiting its portfolio to ensure meaningful partnership with each company. This selectivity allows Georgian's team—including 20+ ML engineers and data scientists in its AI Lab—to embed directly with portfolio companies post-investment, collaborating on production AI deployment, go-to-market strategy, and operational scaling.
Georgian's thesis is articulated around investing "across the AI technology stack, from infrastructure and applications to cybersecurity and developer tools." The firm believes software creation is entering a transformational era where AI becomes embedded at every layer of the stack, and it seeks companies positioned to benefit from or enable this shift. Margaret Wu, Lead Investor at Georgian, characterized Replit's $400M Series D (led by Georgian) by noting: "Software creation is expanding beyond traditional developers and Replit has built a platform that allows people to move from idea to production software in a single environment."
Stage Focus
Georgian invests at the growth equity stage, primarily Series B through Series D:
- Series B: Typical first check into companies with product-market fit, strong traction, and clear scaling opportunities
- Series C: Most frequent stage, where Georgian leads or co-leads rounds into category-creating companies
- Series D+: Follow-on investments into the firm's highest-conviction bets
Georgian is primarily a later-stage investor. Across their Series C investments, the average round size has been approximately $1.76 billion, reflecting the scale of companies they back. They are not seed or early-stage investors.

Typical investment range: $20M–$75M per check. The firm takes a concentrated ownership approach, seeking meaningful stakes (typically 10–20%) and leads or co-leads the majority of its investments.
