Grishin Robotics Research
Investment Thesis
Grishin Robotics is an early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2012 by Dmitry Grishin, the co-founder and former CEO of Mail.ru Group (which listed via a $5.7B IPO). The firm began with a narrow, contrarian thesis: back consumer robotics and connected-hardware founders at a time when most VCs avoided hardware. Early bets on Double Robotics, Sphero, Ring, and eero validated that thesis and produced three Amazon acquisitions plus a Ford acquisition. Since raising its second, four-times-larger $100M fund in 2016, the firm has broadened its aperture to "consumer and consumerized enterprise" startups — companies that take a consumer-grade product experience into large, growing markets such as online entertainment, gaming, food, education, and team productivity, while retaining a distinct edge in robotics, hardware, and physical AI. The firm still frames itself as product-first: partners look for founders solving an unaddressed use case or latent demand, not just a market category.
Sector Focus
Historically concentrated in consumer robotics, IoT, and connected hardware (Double Robotics, Sphero, littleBits, Ring, eero, Occipital, Starship Technologies, Zipline, RobotLAB). The current stated focus has expanded to:
- Consumer and consumerized-enterprise software (Taskade, LFG)
- Gaming and entertainment (Rogue Games, Squido Studio, Arctic7)
- Food and food logistics (Zume, Club Feast)
- Fintech for SMBs (Solid)
- Education (Kadama, Skills, RobotLAB's educational robotics line)
- Physical AI and robotics remain a running theme in the firm's own bi-weekly newsletter, which tracks funding and news across humanoid robotics, embodied AI, and industrial automation — signaling continued conviction in the space even as check-writing has diversified into software.
Stage Focus
Grishin Robotics invests at Seed and Series A, per its own site language ("We invest in Seed and Series A startups"). Through its London-based Grishin Robotics Accelerator, launched to bring "13 years of Grishin Robotics' investment expertise" to UK founders, the firm also engages at Pre-Seed for companies spanning AI-first software to next-generation robotics and hardware.
Check Size
Typical investment range is reported at $1M–$6M (Superscout), consistent with a firm operating a $100M fund with reserves for follow-ons. The firm's very first investment (Double Robotics, 2012) was a $250K seed check, showing willingness to write small checks pre-thesis-formation as well.
Lead Tendency
Public sourcing does not establish a consistent lead/follow pattern across recent deals; marked unknown pending more deal-level detail from the firm.
Recent Activity
The firm's Fund II ($100M, raised 2016) remains its most recently disclosed vehicle; Dealroom lists current AUM at approximately $125M. PitchBook records Grishin Robotics's most recent investment as FinFab (May 2026), a business/productivity software company. The firm's own newsletter (bi-weekly "Grishin Robotics Newsletter," now past issue #75) functions as an industry-facing content arm tracking robotics and physical-AI funding broadly, with occasional call-outs of the firm's own portfolio — for example, flagging portfolio company Zipline's $600M late-stage round (Fidelity-led, $7.6B valuation) in January 2026. The Grishin Robotics Accelerator in London continues to run cohorts for pre-seed/seed UK founders, with a "Autumn '26" cohort application window opened via Luma.
Portfolio Highlights
Exits/acquisitions: littleBits (acquired by Sphero), Ring (acquired by Amazon), eero (acquired by Amazon), Spin (acquired by Ford), LFG (acquired by Xsolla), Ziva Dynamics (acquired by Unity). Active/notable: Zipline (drone delivery, $7.6B valuation as of Jan 2026), Starship Technologies (autonomous delivery robots), Spire (space-to-cloud data analytics, public via SPAC), Double Robotics (telepresence robots, the firm's first-ever investment), Occipital (spatial computing), Sphero (now itself a portfolio company post-acquisition of littleBits), Taskade (team collaboration), Solid (SMB banking infrastructure).
Team
- Dmitry Grishin — Founding Partner. Co-founder and former CEO of Mail.ru Group; took the company public in a $5.7B IPO before founding Grishin Robotics in 2012.
- Verdi Israelyan — Managing Partner.
- Elias Can — Partner.
- Sergey Nikulin — CTO.
- Marta Kaplun — Executive Assistant.
The firm also maintains a large bench of Senior Advisors drawn from operating backgrounds at companies including App Annie, Keepsafe, Guitar Hero, Disqus, Box, DocuSign, Unity, Duolingo, Disney+, and Airbnb.
Decision Process
Structured as a partnership (Founding Partner, Managing Partner, Partner, CTO), consistent with a small, hands-on early-stage team rather than a solo-GP or large investment-committee structure.
Founder Preferences
The firm's language emphasizes "product people" who start from use cases, user flows, and unaddressed problems rather than top-down market theses — consistent with backing technical/product-minded founders in hardware and robotics as well as consumer software.
Geographic Focus
Historically Silicon Valley-based (current address: 2735 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park, CA), with an active London presence via the Grishin Robotics Accelerator targeting UK founders. Some third-party profiles (Crunchbase, TheVentureCodex) describe the firm as based in both Silicon Valley and London.
