Legend Star Research
Investment Thesis
Legend Star (联想之星) is the early-stage venture capital and incubation arm of Legend Holdings, the Beijing-based conglomerate that also controls Lenovo. Founded in 2008, the firm positions itself as a "super angel" investor that pairs early-stage capital with deep, hands-on incubation support drawn from Lenovo's four decades of entrepreneurial and operating experience. The firm's public messaging centers on helping "entrepreneurs change the world" and being a founder's "nearby super angel" — reflecting an incubation-heavy, founder-services model rather than a pure capital-deployment approach.
Sector Focus
Legend Star concentrates on three broad pillars: frontier technology, medical and healthcare, and TMT (technology, media, telecommunications). Within frontier technology, the firm has been especially active in intelligent robotics, autonomous driving, semiconductors, aerospace, and — more recently — hard-tech areas like AI plasma control and fusion energy engineering. Within healthcare, focus areas include innovative pharmaceuticals, gene technology, medical devices, AI-enabled medicine, medical robotics, and synthetic biology. The TMT bucket covers internet-driven transformation of traditional industries and enterprise applications.
Stage Focus
Legend Star is explicitly an early-stage investor, concentrating on angel through Series A. Publicly aggregated deal data shows the firm's most common check stages are Series A (largest count of deals), Seed, and Angel, with average disclosed round sizes ranging from roughly $2.8M (angel) to $15.9M (Series A) — though these are round totals, not Legend Star's own check size, since the firm frequently co-invests.
Check Size
No official check-size range is published on the firm's website. Based on its angel/seed-first positioning and typical round participation, checks are estimated in the low-single-digit-million-dollar range for angel/seed, scaling into Series A follow-ons.
Lead Tendency
Mixed/unclear from public sources — Legend Star appears in both lead and follow-on positions across its 400+ tracked investments, with a strong tendency to be the first institutional or seed-stage check (e.g., its stated angel-round investment in Rgenta Therapeutics and in fusion-energy startup Energy Singularity / 星环聚能) followed by other investors leading later rounds.
Recent Activity
Legend Star closed its fifth RMB-denominated fund in October 2023 at over RMB 900 million, bringing the firm's cumulative managed capital to roughly RMB 5 billion (~$700M) across 11 funds since founding — one of the largest early-stage RMB raises of that year, with more than two-thirds of existing LPs re-upping. Fund V has since deployed into chip/semiconductor, new-energy, and biomedicine deals. Portfolio company Pony.ai (autonomous driving, an early Legend Star investment) completed its Nasdaq IPO in November 2024 and a follow-on Hong Kong listing in November 2025. Portfolio company Deem (corporate travel technology) was acquired by Juniper Group (part of Constellation Software) in June 2026. As recently as August 2026, angel-stage portfolio company Energy Singularity (星环聚能), a fusion-energy startup, closed an RMB 880 million Series A++ round.
Portfolio Highlights
Legend Star has invested in over 400 projects (roughly 217 distinct companies by some counts), generating 4 unicorns, 35 IPOs, and 13 acquisitions. Marquee names include Pony.ai (autonomous driving, Nasdaq: PONY), Lakala (payments, publicly listed), Megvii (computer vision/AI, Shanghai STAR Market listed), Suning.com (e-commerce/retail), STX Entertainment (media), Ripcord (AI document digitization), Deem (corporate travel, acquired 2026), Hai Robotics, Knowbox, Youxinpai, AISpeech, Burning Rock Biotech, Axonics (medtech), Oncotherex, Rgenta Therapeutics (RNA-targeted small-molecule drug discovery), and CoJourney.

Decision Process
Structured as a partnership with sector-specialized partners (frontier tech, healthcare, TMT) reporting through a Managing Partner/President, under the oversight of the Lenovo Holdings chairman. Deal sourcing and diligence appear partner-led within each sector vertical rather than a single generalist committee.
Founder Preferences
Legend Star's incubation-first model (CEO training program, "Entrepreneurship Alliance" resource network) suggests a preference for technical or domain-expert founders who benefit from structured operating support in addition to capital — consistent with its heavy angel/seed weighting and hands-on incubation services.
Geographic Focus
Overwhelmingly China-focused (the large majority of tracked deals), with a smaller number of investments in the US and scattered deals in the UK, France, India, and Japan. Headquartered in Beijing.
