PXN Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
PXN Ventures is the venture capital arm of PXN Group, formed in June 2025 through the merger of Edinburgh-founded Par Equity and Manchester-based Praetura Ventures. The firm's stated mission is to correct a structural imbalance in UK venture funding: more than 80% of UK venture capital is concentrated in London and the South East, and PXN exists to put that capital in the hands of promising founders in the North of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland instead. PXN describes its approach as "more than money" — pairing capital with hands-on operational support, board involvement, and access to a network of regional advisers, universities, and corporate partners (NCC Group, KPMG, Comcast, and others appear as portfolio partners). The firm backs founders across the full stack of Northern innovation: enterprise software, fintech, healthtech, deep tech, cybersecurity, cleantech, and advanced manufacturing, with a noticeable concentration in university spinouts (Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, Surrey, Leeds, Edinburgh).
Sector Focus
PXN is a broad, regionally-defined generalist rather than a sector specialist. Within the current portfolio, the heaviest concentrations are enterprise SaaS and dev tools, fintech, cybersecurity, healthtech/medtech, deep tech and advanced materials, proptech, HR tech, adtech/martech, and clean/energy tech, with smaller but recurring bets in agtech, robotics, insurtech, and consumer. AI is a strong cross-cutting theme (AI-native cybersecurity, AI compliance, AI tender automation, AI retail pricing) rather than a standalone sector.
Stage Focus
PXN invests from pre-seed through growth-stage follow-ons, with the centre of gravity at seed and Series A. Recent 2026 activity spans a pre-seed follow-on (BidScript), two Series A/growth rounds it led (Silveray, VASO Global), an equity follow-on into a later-stage scale-up (Advanced Electric Machines), and a Series A participation alongside a lead investor (Cytix, led by Northern Gritstone). The firm also runs PraeSeed, a cohort-based pre-seed investment programme for the North backed by the British Business Bank's NPIF II.
Check Size
Per PXN Group's own merger announcement, the combined platform is capable of writing equity cheques from £200,000 to £8 million (roughly $260K–$10.4M) across sectors and stages, from seed to scale. Coverage of specific deals (e.g. Advanced Electric Machines) confirms PXN "typically invests from around £200K."
Lead Tendency
Mixed. PXN led the Series A into Silveray and the funding round into VASO Global, and led/co-led BidScript's pre-seed as a returning investor. It participated as one of several backers (alongside Northern Gritstone and Auriga Cyber Ventures) in Cytix's Series A. Several PXN-managed vehicles (NPIF II – PXN Equity Finance, GMC Life Sciences Fund) also write follow-on cheques into existing portfolio companies rather than leading new rounds.
Recent Activity
PXN has been highly active through 2026, deploying from multiple managed vehicles (NPIF II – PXN Equity Finance, GMC Life Sciences Fund, Par Scale-Up Fund, PraeSeed):
- August 2026: Participated in Cytix's $7M Series A (change-risk/compliance platform for AI-era software), alongside lead Northern Gritstone and Auriga Cyber Ventures.
- August 2026: Follow-on equity into Advanced Electric Machines' £16M raise (rare-earth-free electric motors), complemented by Innovate UK loan support.
- July 2026: Follow-on into BidScript's $800K pre-seed extension (AI tender-bid platform), alongside new investor SFC Capital, taking the company past $1M total pre-seed.
- June 2026: Led VASO Global's £5M+ raise (recycled-glass structural building panels for modular homes).
- June 2026: Led Silveray's £5M Series A (ultra-thin flexible X-ray film, University of Surrey spinout).
- June 2026: Portfolio company Aveni (AI/LLM tooling for financial services) raised a further £12M.
- March 2026: PXN Group was named to Sifted's 2026 list of the 50 best investors in the UK & Ireland — the highest-ranked Northern investor on the list.
Fund status: actively deploying.

Decision Process
Investment decisions run through formal investment committees (the Par Equity Investment Committee and the wider PXN Investment Committee both retain named members), reflecting an institutional, partnership-style governance model rather than solo-GP decision-making — consistent with PXN's management of regulated public-sector mandates (NPIF II, GMC Life Sciences Fund) and retail/institutional investment products (EIS, VCT, Business Relief).
Founder Preferences
PXN's public messaging and portfolio composition point to a preference for technical and university-connected founders (heavy representation of Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, Surrey, Leeds and Edinburgh spinouts) building in deep tech, healthtech, fintech and industrial/cleantech, as well as founders explicitly building outside London who value a "more than money," hands-on regional investor.
Geographic Focus
Overwhelmingly Northern UK: Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Belfast, Liverpool, Sheffield and Aberdeen are all represented in the portfolio, with offices in Manchester (HQ, Level 8 Bauhaus, 27 Quay Street), Leeds, Edinburgh and London. A minority of portfolio companies are headquartered in London or elsewhere in the UK, and PXN Group manages several publicly-backed regional vehicles (NPIF II for the North of England, GMC Life Sciences Fund for Greater Manchester/Cheshire) that reinforce the regional mandate.
