Real Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Real Ventures is Canada's largest and most active early-stage venture capital firm, founded in Montreal in 2007 by John Stokes, JS Cournoyer, and Alan MacIntosh. The firm's founding premise is that "people, not money, build game-changing companies" — Real positions itself as an ally to founders from day one, helping them scale themselves as they scale their businesses, rather than acting as a purely transactional capital provider. Over the past decade-plus, Real has shifted toward a systems-level investing lens: backing ventures that are correlated with profit but also aligned with what the firm calls "planetary and societal flourishing." The firm is explicitly industry-agnostic, with stated interest spanning AI, connectivity, and sustainable innovation, and an emphasis on companies tackling systemic challenges rather than a narrow vertical thesis.
Sector Focus
Real's own portfolio filter taxonomy (drawn from its website) spans AI & Robotics, Blockchain, Construction, Consumer, Education, Enterprise, Financial, Health & Wellness, Marketplace, Security & Infrastructure, and Transportation. In practice the portfolio skews toward deep tech and AI infrastructure (Tenstorrent, Xanadu, Nord Quantique, SPARK Microsystems), applied AI and enterprise software (Botpress, BenchSci, MindBridge Ai, Integrate AI), fintech (Delphia, FundThrough, Plum, Clearco), health tech (Eli Health, Swift Medical, BIOS Health), robotics (Avidbots, Omnirobotic), and consumer/marketplace (Mejuri, Busbud, Transit).
Stage Focus
Real invests from pre-seed through early growth, with a stated emphasis on being a founder's first institutional partner: "we help our founders lay enduring foundations, supporting them from pre-seed and standing by them as they scale." Historically the firm led seed rounds directly and via its FounderFuel accelerator program, then followed on into Series A and beyond for its strongest performers.
Check Size
Real does not disclose exact check sizes publicly. Third-party aggregators (Failory, InvestorMatch, WaveUp) converge on a range of roughly $250K–$2M per initial check, with an average closer to $300K–$350K at the earliest stages and larger reserve checks for follow-on rounds in breakout portfolio companies.
Lead Tendency
Real has historically led or co-led pre-seed and seed rounds, consistent with its role as a hands-on, founder-development-focused early investor and the operator of the FounderFuel accelerator. Its own site FAQ states the firm is "currently focused on supporting our existing investee companies and making follow-on investments into those companies" rather than sourcing net-new leads at present — a materially different current posture from its historical lead-investor role.
Recent Activity
Real manages roughly $325–330M in committed capital across five funds and describes its active portfolio (100+ companies) as valued at $10B+ collectively (Crunchbase/LinkedIn), while its own media kit states over $300M invested into 70+ current high-growth companies valued at $15B+. Confirmed recent portfolio milestones: quantum/AI chip company Tenstorrent closed a $693M+ Series D led by Samsung Securities and AFW Partners at a $2B pre-money valuation (December 2024); AI agent platform Botpress raised a $25M Series B led by Framework Venture Partners (June 2025); and nonprofit fundraising platform Zeffy surpassed $1B in cumulative donations processed (May 2025). None of these announcements name Real Ventures as a participant, so they are recorded here as portfolio milestones rather than confirmed Real-led or Real-participated rounds.

Decision Process
Real operates as a partnership: "we work as a team... our collective expertise and network are at your disposal." Decisions are made collaboratively after relationship-building and team assessment; the firm does not publish a fixed decision timeline, noting that "timing depends on the complexity of the deal."
Founder Preferences
Real looks for a strong team with unique market insight and massive scaling potential, favoring founders who combine vision with execution, demonstrate unique insight, and show a growth mindset. The firm prefers cohesive founding teams with complementary skillsets over solo founders, though it will back exceptional solo founders in rare cases. It does not sign NDAs at the exploratory stage.
Geographic Focus
Real is headquartered in Montreal (3 Place Ville-Marie) and is primarily focused on Canadian entrepreneurs, with active investment across the broader Canadian ecosystem (Toronto included). It will invest in U.S.-based and other international companies when the team and mission align with its thesis, though it prioritizes proximity to its own team for close collaboration.
