Replicator VC Research
Overview
Replicator VC is a San Francisco based micro venture fund founded in 2025 by Steve Simitzis. Its website (replicator.vc) is a single logo and a contact address ([email protected]), so nearly everything below comes from third-party sources: LinkedIn, SEC filings, press releases, Tufts University speaker bios and interviews with the founder. The firm is a state-registered investment adviser (Form ADV filed February 2026, registered address in San Francisco), and Replicator VC Fund I, LP filed a Form D on December 10, 2025 for a Delaware venture fund with a stated offering target of up to $5.0M. Nothing is confirmed as raised on the public record, so AUM of $5M is a target, not a verified figure. LinkedIn lists one employee, with a small number of associated people, and one venture fellow is publicly mentioned.
Investment Thesis
Replicator invests in early-stage startups that accelerate the future of food, with a focus on cellular agriculture (cultivated meat and the enabling technology around it) and longevity-oriented food. Simitzis describes three areas he actively looks at: enabling technologies for cellular agriculture and bioprocessing that cut costs, pet food, and future-food replacements for ingredients such as pigments and dyes that have broad applications across food, beauty, nutraceuticals and textiles. In a recent newsletter interview he framed longevity food as healthspan, not lifespan, with three contributions: keeping the food system productive, controlling what goes into food, and programmable nutrition. He favors molecules where biological evidence already exists and the startup brings a new, cheaper way to make them. Cost of goods is the recurring theme: he argues the funding crash in cultivated meat refocused founders on B2B customers (meat producers, pet food makers) and that cost, not demand, is the central problem in alternative protein.
Stage Focus and Check Size
Pre-seed and seed. Simitzis says he is most interested in pre-seed and seed where founders are inventing high-leverage cost-reducing technology. Fund I is tiny, so checks are small. EdiMembre's $400K pre-seed included Replicator alongside Siddhi Capital, Meach Cove Capital and Cellular Agriculture Ltd, which implies a check well under $400K there. Replicator led the Deco Labs seed round. No check size range is published; the $25K to $250K range used in this profile is an inference from the fund size and should be treated as low confidence.
Lead Tendency
Both. Replicator co-invested in EdiMembre's pre-seed and led Deco Labs' seed round, where Simitzis had first been an advisor to the team.
Portfolio Highlights
- Deco Labs: a Tufts cellular agriculture spin-out that uses oil-industry waste derived inputs to cut cell culture media cost for cultivated meat. Replicator led the seed.
- EdiMembre: a MilliporeSigma (Merck KGaA) spin-out building edible hollow fiber membranes and bioreactors for structured whole-cut cultivated meat. $400K pre-seed, August 2025.
- Totality Biosciences: engineers soybeans to produce human milk oligosaccharides, described by Simitzis as a Replicator portfolio company.
- Solio Bio: a San Francisco biomimicry foundry for longevity skincare ingredients, backed by Simitzis (Replicator VC) per the founder's announcement.
Caplight lists 25 portfolio companies for the firm, including True Anomaly and Hadrian, but those are defense and space companies that do not fit the thesis and likely reflect Simitzis's earlier personal angel or syndicate activity, so they are not included here. Simitzis also invested through Solvable Syndicate (for example Omni Pet), which predates Replicator.
Team
Steve Simitzis, Founder and Managing Partner. Started as a software engineer in Silicon Valley, became a serial founder with three exits, and entered alternative protein through pet food, including time at Mars Petcare and as CMO of Wild Earth. He is Investor-in-Residence at the Tufts University Center for Cellular Agriculture (TUCCA), supporting academic spin-outs at the earliest stage, and was a General Partner at Solvable Syndicate. He has been vegan for nearly 30 years, and says that motivates the work.
Decision Process
Solo GP. A single managing partner makes the decisions. Dealflow comes heavily from the Tufts cellular agriculture ecosystem and the Boston/Bay Area alt-protein community, and a venture fellow sources pre-seed biomanufacturing and synthetic biology deals.
Founder Preferences
He says the top trait is being obsessed with the problem, with tenacity and curiosity downstream of that. He also wants founders who protect sleep, food, exercise and relationships, and says a founder who neglects those is not investable. He prefers science with existing data behind it and a credible path to low cost at scale, and B2B customers over consumer launches.
Geographic Focus
Based in San Francisco; portfolio is concentrated in the Boston area (Deco Labs, EdiMembre) and the Bay Area (Berkeley, San Francisco). No formal geographic restriction is published.
Recent Activity and Gaps
Active in 2025 and 2026: EdiMembre pre-seed (August 2025), Deco Labs seed lead (2026), Fund I Form D (December 2025), Future Food-Tech San Francisco 2026 commentary. The website has no portfolio, team or thesis page, no fund size confirmation and no published check range. Fund status is treated as actively deploying on the strength of recent deals.
