Toyota Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Toyota Ventures is Toyota's early-stage venture capital arm, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area. It invests in deep tech and climate tech: AI, robotics, next-generation computing, aerospace, mobility, materials, energy, carbon capture, batteries and energy storage, and sustainability. The stated mission is to explore what is next by helping early-stage startups bring disruptive technologies and business models to market quickly. The firm looks for both financial returns and strategic value, and says financial returns must precede strategic value.
Fund Structure
The firm runs two thematic strategies, a Frontier Fund (frontier tech, AI, robotics, computing, space) and a Climate Fund (renewable energy, hydrogen, carbon capture, EV solutions, energy storage and batteries, sustainability). Public sources say Toyota Ventures has grown from $100M in 2017 to more than $800M in assets under management across six funds, including two $150M funds announced in April 2024. Growth-stage investing sits with a sister entity, Woven Capital, which the firm points larger companies toward.
Stage Focus
Early stage: pre-seed, seed and Series A, with participation in later rounds alongside co-investors (for example a Series C in River Mobility in 2026). Third-party trackers put a planning range of roughly $1M to $10M per investment.
Check Size
Roughly $1M to $10M per company based on third-party trackers; the firm does not publish a check range.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. The firm both leads and co-invests, and public records show it as a co-investor in several recent rounds. Marked as both.
Recent Activity
The fund is actively deploying. Pitchbook lists the latest investment as Efficient Computer on 2026-08-24, and Caplight shows River Mobility (Series C, Aug 2026) and Walden Robotics (Seed, Jul 2026) as co-investments.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio page lists roughly 97 companies. Notable names include Joby Aviation (eVTOL, public), Nauto, Slamcore, Intuition Robotics, Revel, Burro, Pickle Robot, Starfish Space, Stoke Space, Realtime Robotics, Parallel Domain, Perceptive Automata, Sea Machines, Universal Hydrogen, Living Carbon and Relectrify. The mix is heavy in robotics, autonomy and mobility, plus climate hardware, space, and AI compute.

Founder Preferences
Founder-first, mission-driven, global in reach. The firm looks for courage, humility and tenacity in people tackling hard technical problems, and values diverse approaches (it is a Diversity VC Standard participant). Portfolio companies get access to Toyota's technical expertise and business development resources.
Geographic Focus
Global, with a San Francisco Bay Area base. The portfolio spans the US, Europe, Israel, and Asia. The firm describes its reach as global.
Additional context: portfolio companies also benefit from strategic support in business development, product, fundraising, marketing and executive coaching, and from corporate engagement staff who connect startups with Toyota business units. The firm has a dedicated portfolio engagement team, which is unusual for an early-stage fund and a differentiator for founders in hardware and deep tech who need access to manufacturing, mobility and research partners.
