SHIFT Invest Research
Investment Thesis
SHIFT Invest is an Amsterdam-based impact venture capital firm, established in 2009, that backs European founders turning climate and nature challenges into commercial businesses. Its stated belief is that innovation is essential to restoring the balance between nature and society, and that start-ups are a key driver of it. It invests where environmental impact and financial returns reinforce each other, and requires that a company's impact is core to the product, measurable and additional (it would not happen without the company).
Sector Focus
The firm invests in four themes it says carry the largest environmental and financial returns:
- Energy: affordable, resilient energy systems (examples: Vandebron, Friday Energy, Thermeleon, HR Energy, Ampyx Power, Maxem, Canopus Drilling Solutions)
- Mobility: more efficient movement of people and goods (examples: VÆRIDION electric aviation, OTIV autonomous rail, Roboat, We4Sea, RideTandem, ViriCiti)
- Food and Agriculture: producing more with less (examples: Protix, Foodforecast, Pieter Pot, FUL Foods, SAIA Agrobotics, Meatless, Time-travelling Milkman)
- Industry: resource-efficient, resilient industrial processes (examples: ChainCraft, Resoniks, Kriya Materials, BYBORRE, The Renewal Workshop, Whiffle, TEEPTRAK)
It looks for defensible innovation: novel science, hard-tech or category-defining software, led by complementary founders with operating depth.
Stage Focus
SHIFT prefers to enter at Seed (product-market fit) and Series A (proven, scalable model) and makes follow-on investments until exit. For pre-seed and proof-of-concept rounds, including spin-offs from Dutch research, it invests through the TTT Green Tech fund together with Dutch universities and TNO, with an initial investment of EUR 300-500k.
Check Size
The firm states it invests up to EUR 10M per company, with EUR 300-500k initial tickets through TTT Green Tech. Figures are in euros.
Lead Tendency
The website says it (co)leads deals itself and is used to working alongside other VCs, so lead tendency is recorded as both.
